Getting into private school: the interview

Expert advice and insights into the private school interview

We provide all the information you need on the application and admissions process on OurKids.net. Here we focus on the private school interview. We asked school officials and education consultants to weigh in on key feature of applications. What follows are valuable insights to help you ace your interview.

For expert advice on a wide range of questions related to “getting in,” read our comprehensive guide. For valuable insights on the more general question of choosing the right school, read our in-depth education expert and parent interviews and our choosing guide.

On the interview

“The interview is a way for the admissions office to get to know more about the applicant, to see if they are the right fit for the school. Prospective students will be asked questions about their interests, academics, family, and character. There will be opportunities to ask questions about the school during the interview as well. To prepare for the interview, students should reflect on their interests and why they want to move schools. They should also research the school and be knowledgeable about the programs and overall approach of the school, both in and out of the classroom. Other than that, a student should not over rehearse. The best interview is one where a student can honestly and meaningfully reflect who they are as a person and what is important to them—not what they think we want to hear.”
Kathy LaBranche, Director of Admissions, Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ontario

“The interview is an important part of the process. We don’t want students to be over prepared or rehearsed, as we are looking to get to know the girls. The message I’d like the girls to have before they come for an interview is that at Havergal we are looking to discover what their strengths are, what interests them, and what they are passionate about. There are no ‘wrong’ answers. For girls who would feel more comfortable preparing something in advance, I would recommend taking some time to reflect on what they feel their strengths are and what they hope their new school has to offer. At Havergal, it really is a dialogue, with many opportunities for questions on both sides.”
Maggie Houston-White, Executive Director of Enrolment Management, Havergal College, Toronto, Ontario

“The interview is one of the only opportunities a family has to add that human, emotional, and personal touch to their application, so it’s crucial that you do your homework. Preparing for the interview is more than simply memorizing a set of interview questions and responses. Some quick tips on preparing for the interview:

  1. Research fully each school and understand their respective missions, visions, and core values;
  2. Understand what your family’s educational values are and how those align with the school’s;
  3. Prepare to communicate just how involved you are in your child’s life and don’t forget to provide examples;
  4. Think about how you can articulate to the school why your family and the school are the right fit; and,
  5. Come up with one or two thoughtful, non-clichéd questions to ask the interviewer.
    Bryan Ide, Educational Director, KEY Education

“The interviews are an opportunity to for the school to get to know the parents and/or students and vice versa. Sometimes people prepare their children for the interviews to such a degree that they come in with prepared answers for questions they think they will receive, and then become anxious because we ask questions they weren’t expecting. The best thing to do to prepare is to relax, to know that all answers are good answers, and also to understand that they can also ask us questions. It is a good idea, of course, to have familiarized themselves with the school—visit the website and/or read documents they have received and thus show an interest in and appreciation for the school in their responses.”
—Antonia Zannis, Deputy Head of School, The Study, Montreal, Quebec

“Parents should inquire what the interview will entail? We have clients who we advocate for and can sometimes obtain the interview questions on behalf of our clients. Those are cases where we are confident that the school is a good fit for our client and we do whatever we can to assist in the process to maximize the chances for a positive outcome.

Students should listen carefully to the questions in the interview and answer them. If they have prepared scripts that don’t address the questions, it will not reflect well on the student. The student should be sure to explain why it is important for the school to accept them. What do they have to offer the school? What will they be able to contribute?”
Ann and Karen Wolff, Education Consultant, Wolff Educational Services

“In terms of what to expect, the students and parents will be asked questions so that the school can get to know the student’s interests and how they will fit into what exists within the school. The word ‘interview’ can be overplayed, as this process is typically more like a friendly chat. That being said, good manners are still extremely important. You can prepare by thinking about what the student is interested in both outside and inside the school, and how the parents see themselves and their involvement in the community.

In terms of dressing for the interview, I think that the student should mirror what the students in the school wear. If it’s a more formal uniform, then don’t wear jeans or a dress; instead stick with dress pants and a shirt. The student should respect the school’s philosophy of dress. If there isn’t a uniform, it’s still a good idea to dress professionally.”
Elaine Danson, Education Consultant, Danson and Associates

“The interview allows the admissions committee to add a personal dimension to the application. We typically look for the ‘Five A’s’ in our questioning: Academics, Arts, Athletics, Active Citizenship, and Adventure. Other questions we might ask applicants include what types of books they like to read, who are the people they most admire, etc. A successful interview is one where the student demonstrates—by answering questions about their interest and experience in the ‘Five A’s’—that they are well-rounded, confident, and would be committed to our school.”
—Kevin White, Director of Student Recruitment, Glenlyon Norfolk School, Victoria, British Columbia

“In my opinion, the best interview prep can be done at home with parents or other family members serving as interviewers. Come up with a few interesting, challenging questions that require the student (your child) to think a little and then probe their responses with follow-up questions. UTS has a very specific interview process—the Multiple Mini Interview—so familiarity with each school’s interview format is important. If you can replicate the process at home a little, that will provide great practice for your child.”
—Garth Chalmers, Vice-principal, University of Toronto Schools, Toronto, Ontario

“We interview parents and applicants together for Grade 1 – 6. For JK and SK, we interview the parents only. For Grades 7 – 11, we first interview the applicant alone and then we invite the parents to join in for the second portion of the interview. Interviews are typically one hour in length. We are looking for an honest conversation of interests, strengths and areas for growth. We ask questions about extracurricular interests, interactions with friends, learning styles, favourite subjects and future goals. The interview is an important step where we can get to know the applicant and her family personally. This personal connection helps us to ensure that our school’s values, philosophy and culture align with what our applicant families are looking for in a school.”
Kimberly Carter, Director of Enrolment Management, Branksome Hall, Toronto, Ontario

“I love it when families arrive with a whole list of questions. It shows they have been thinking about things and are willing to ask some tough questions. The best way to prepare is to spend some time thinking about what it might be like to live at a boarding school and then write down some thoughts and questions. In terms of the interview, we are really concerned about three things: Is it the student’s choice to be here (we don’t accept students who are being ‘sent’)? Do they have the aptitude to succeed in a university preparatory school? And, is it a good fit (socially, emotionally, etc.)?”
Clayton Johnston, Director of Admissions, Brentwood College School, Mill Bay, British Columbia

“At Appleby College, we consider the interview to be an opportunity to find out more about the student. To give them the ‘stage,’ so they can share with us who they really are and ask any questions that they might have. We also appreciate that for many students (and parents) this will be their first time being interviewed by a school. So, students are encouraged to give some thought as to why they may enjoy a specific subject or sport or instrument, but we find that the less scripted the response, the more relaxed they will be. Our goal is for students and their parents to enjoy the interview process
Luke Seamone, Executive Director of Admissions, Appleby College, Oakville, Ontario

“We are often asked how to prepare for the interview, and our reply is always the same—there is no need to prepare, nor can you (nor do we want you to) prepare for an interview. However, we do encourage your child to be well-rested and relaxed, and to think about what they want to know about the school. The interview is as much us finding out about your child as it is for your child to discover more about SMUS.”
—Alexis Lang Lunn, Assistant Director of Admissions, St. Michaels University School, Victoria, British Columbia

“Our admissions interview is meant to be both an opportunity for us to learn about the prospective student and an opportunity for the student and family to ask questions important to them as they confirm that we are the right fit. It is always helpful for parents and students to prepare important questions in advance to make sure they are getting all their questions answered.”
—Chris Strickey, Director of Admissions, King’s-Edgehill School, Windsor, Nova Scotia

“We always suggest that the best prep for the interview is a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast! And, that the student be themselves.”
—Louise Paoli di Prisco, Assistant Director, Boarding Admissions, Ashbury College, Ottawa, Ontario
