What kids learn in visual arts class

Kids and teens learn a variety of skills in visual arts programs and classes, as described below. Some of these are more hands-on skills while others are more theoretical. Consult with each program above to confirm what they teach.

Fundamental visual arts concepts. Some key visual arts concepts are form, perspective, anatomy, composition, value, and lighting. Instructors will provide students with assignments and exercises that provide a deep understanding of these concepts. Kids will learn how to create appealing art designs that embody each of these concepts.

2D and 3D creation. Each art discipline varies between 2D and 3D design. 2D design teaches kids how to construct images with width and height. In 3D design, children practice depicting width, height, and depth. Both styles develop children’s creativity and the ability to represent the world in more than one way.

Motor skills. The experiential learning structure of visual arts classes forces children to work with their hands. As this occurs, children begin to strengthen the joints and muscles in their hands. This can improve their fine motor skills as well as the quality of their work.

Visual storytelling. Visual art can integrate visual elements with storytelling. In these visual art forms, kids will learn how colour, perspective, and composition enhance tension and depicts character and setting. Visual storytelling helps kids create more thematic and emotional art pieces.

The benefits of visual arts programs

Exposure to many art forms. A diverse range of art forms are available to students interested in visual arts programs. Kids can learn a wide variety of skills, such as painting, drawing, digital design, sculpting, photography, and filmmaking. This can help your child find their artistic niche.

Use a variety of materials. Each art form involves a unique blend of tools and materials. For example, in painting classes, kids will experiment with oil, acrylic, and watercolour paints.
