Slingshot Innovation Academy, Pitch & Persuasion Lab: Debate

This camp is designed to build the following character traits:

  • Tolerance: Debate requires participants to explore multiple sides of complex issues. By constructing arguments for perspectives they may not personally hold, students practice broad-mindedness, empathy, and the ability to engage in respectful, productive civil discourse.
  • Self-regulation: Successful debaters must remain calm under pressure. Students learn to regulate their emotions and maintain their composure during heated intellectual exchanges. They develop the discipline to listen actively and construct thoughtful, logical rebuttals.

Ready to make your case? The Slingshot Pitch & Persuasion Lab: Debate challenges youth to think critically and argue persuasively. Hosted at Branksome Hall's innovation hub, this dynamic summer program transforms students into sharp, confident debaters capable of navigating complex real-world issues.

Participants will dive into the mechanics of formal argumentation, active listening, and respectful civil discourse. Rather than just arguing, students learn to research deeply, anticipate counterpoints, and articulate logical rebuttals on the spot.

  • Hands-on Practice: Engage in daily sparring rounds, structured debates, and critical thinking drills.
  • Final Showcase: Compete in a culminating debate showcase, demonstrating poise and quick thinking under pressure.
