The Celtic Times: Camp Continues with Green Initiatives

This year Camp Celtic made its first steps towards food sovereignty with the addition of a small garden and greenhouse. We had a very successful season providing the lunchtime salad bar with greens and veggies as well as supplementing many of the vegetarian meals with fresh produce grown right here on camp! Several individual campers and counsellors were an integral part to the program assisting with garden design, crop establishment, plant maintenance, harvesting and of course eating a few of those extra snow peas right from the vine. Introducing young people to the joys and importance of food production is a key objective of the program and we thank all those campers and staff who helped out this year!

The aim of the garden is not only to provide camp with fresh food and educate campers, but also to demonstrate the feasibility of regenerative, small-scale agriculture. This means growing with the intent to build topsoil and enhance the biodiversity of the worked area. If implemented properly, this strategy allows for high yields without the use of chemical inputs. Soil is built using only natural, local materials (like our very own pig and chicken manure!) while diseases and pests are discouraged by natural predators, crop rotation and conscious garden design.

Some upcoming projects include the establishment of a large raspberry stand, expanding the apple orchard, assembling a second greenhouse and building additional planting beds for more growing space.

We hope to see you at the garden in the upcoming season whether you’re coming as a camper or just dropping someone off.  If you are a camper looking to get involved, be sure to sign up for ‘Planet Earth’ on your registration form for some hands-on garden fun as well as nature hikes, wildlife watching and perhaps the chance to feed the Camp Celtic pigs and chickens!

Please note the Schedule changes for the 2017 Season.

The big changes include the addition of a third week-long session of regular camp (Session 5 : Aug 5—11), as well as a second Rookie Camp (Session 6 : Aug 12—14, and Session 7 : Aug 16—18).

The Canoe Trip this year will span over the second half of Session 5 and both Rookie Camps. Registration will occur

at the regular time on Thurs. Aug 9th, and de-registration will be during the regular hours at the end of Session 7

(Aug 18).

Our Basketball/Volleyball Camp is the same week of Summer that it always is but it is now called Session 8.

Some sessions and programs fill up quick! Don’t miss the early bird deadline to not only get a discount, but to get the dates and program that suit you :)
