Matt Painter was looking to fill out the 2020 class with a big man, and they don’t get much bigger than Edey. Coming in at 7’3, with a 7’7 wingspan and a size 20 shoe, the towering Torontonian should quench Matt Painters thirst for gargantuan centers for the time being. It will also give announcers a chance to dust off their Haas shoe stories, which took up at least a quarter of every Purdue broadcast during Hass’s tenure with the Boilermakers.
I’m working from limited sources, but from the film I’ve seen, Edey moves well and has a smooth release on his shot. Finishing his high school career at IMG should only further his development. He’ll need to pack weight onto his frame, but he doesn’t look like a “project” in terms of skill. I see him as a bit of a Haas/Haarms hybrid. He looks to have more of Haarms explosiveness, but appears to be a more post oriented big man like Haas.
Depending on what Haarms does in the off-season, I see Edey as a red shirt possibility while he continues to fill out his frame, but that’s a luxury Purdue can afford with their current center depth chart.
Let’s all welcome our large Canadian son.
