Kids get an immersion in rural life and animal care close to home at Meadowlarke Stables. Riding lessons are the camp’s main activity, but kids also meet a variety of farm animals, see a working farm up close, learn about animals' behaviour, and grow their environmental awareness. Riding lessons are tailored to each camper; they learn to walk, trot, canter, and even jump, for more advanced riders. In lunging games and other hands-on horsemanship, kids learn all about grooming, saddling, and other equine care. Camp staff is actually made up of many ex-campers, and all staff are enthusiastic riders and horse lovers. The culmination is a Friday Show Day where friends and family get to watch riding demonstrations and horse costume contests that showcase what kids have learned and the fun they've had. It's noteworthy that the horses and other animals are all rescue animals given a second chance here. Campers come away with a memorable connection to the horses and animals, learn lessons in patience, and build confidence, courage, and curiosity, all in a genuine rural setting, yet right in the city.
