(4) Overall experience

I am so thankful for my time at camp. I learned many important leadership skills. It also deepened my faith as I came to know Jesus in a real way. I spent so many summers at camp, it does not really compare to other formative experiences I am without a doubt the person I am because of my summers at camp. So many of my closest friends now were on staff the same summers. The community created at camp among the staff is so different and special. I also had some very tough moments especially when I was in charge but those taught me many valuable life lessons and provided experience that I may not have gotten other places.

(4.5) Unique value

The essence is all about the community that is formed every single summer. The bond among the staff is something unique. When you live every day with the same people for potentially four months you become very close. It is unique from other opportunities in that all the staff are seeking to follow Jesus together. I also got a chance to do so many different jobs. For example, I was the maintenance guy one summer and I learned many new things in all sorts of areas like plumbing, carpentry and roofing. When I was the program director it also gave me a chance to learn how to lead which I am very thankful for.

(3.5) Program quality and activities

There are many experiences where I was pushed out of my comfort zone at camp. Like the first time I drove the boat but first needed to figure out how to back a trailer into a lake. The zip line and climbing wall are a great chance for kids to go outside their comfort zone and the training for those skill blocks is excellent and the staff are well prepared. One of my favorite traditions that I looked forward to was when I would dress up as a monk for dinner one night and try and make everyone be quiet for as long as possible as more and more comedic events happened. Everyone always ended that dinner having laughed a ton.

(5) Social dynamics and experience

I still have many relationships with people I met at camp. Some of my closest friends were also staff summers that I was there. It is so unique of everyone living together for in some cases 4 straight months. Oddly every summer we would work all week together and yet when you went home on weekends the people from camp would still hang out together. At the university this year many former staff members formed a volleyball team and played rec volleyball which was a blast.

(5) Skills and growth

I gained so many skills at camp both physical and interpersonal. I learned how to fix a tractor and install a sink. I learned to back up a trailer and how to roof a house. But more importantly than those, I learned how to lead and set an example and give clear instructions and know when to give advice or encourage. These are all skills I am still using at my new job and intend to take into my teaching career. There were times when I was left alone to try and figure things out and maybe at the time I was unhappy but it also taught me perseverance.

(5) Reflections and advice

I have many things I could write here. But I will keep it to the main thing. I wouldn’t trade my time at camp for anything. Looking back I would definitely do things differently, especially in my last summer. But I learned so much that it was all worth it. The most important lesson I learned was to keep putting Jesus first even when all the other things seem pressing knowing Jesus is the most pressing. Secondly, take time for the staff, it was easy to think about my mountain of tasks but every time taking a walk with a staff member who wanted to talk was more important. At the end of the day, it’s about knowing Jesus and loving people.
