I really enjoyed the program and looked forward to going there. I could express myself and really feel like I am being challenged academically. Another great aspect of it was the peers. Everybody there was also motivated to learn, which made it much more fun to attend. I attended both the English and Math programs and did all of the possible levels. It definitely leveled me up for school and allowed me to thrive. On top of that, however, the skills I learned at Brain Power are still helpful for me even past my school education.
Creativity is what sets this program apart. This is true for their teaching curriculum, which is fun while still being educational, for their instructors who are creative in the way they encourage children and push them in their life journey, and for students going there who are, not only encouraged to think out side the box, but are also taught how to do so effectively so that ideas that come from thinking outside the box are useful and actionable.
The curricula for both Math and English are exquisite. In English, I was taught both the foundations of English as a language (grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and good writing structure) and philosophical ideas and reasoning. In math, first, the foundations of logical thinking and problem-solving were laid for me when I was younger. Then, when I became a bit older and did the harder courses, advanced math concepts were introduced to me in such a way that I not only understood them, but also got an intuition for their applications.
One of my fondest memories of this program is the people I met there. I still keep up with not only the students I learnt with, but also my instructors. - Keeping up with fellow peers is a pleasure because they are all bright-minded individuals with whom it is a pleasure to chat and know what they are doing now. - Keeping up with instructors is a pleasure because I feel as though they are legitimately interested in me as a person and want to see me succeed not only in class, but outside of it as well.
I am currently an Engineering student at the University of Waterloo. One of the reasons I was able to get into Waterloo and thrive there is because of the values/skills that Brain Power taught me. Whether it be my math skills, my understanding of my world around me, or even being able to approach new topics with a curious mindset rather than fear, is something I have Brain Power to thank for.
I am very happy that I got the opportunity to attend Brain Power and experience so much of the program. If there is one key piece of advice I would give to current students, it is to make sure to do the assigned homework! There is not too much of it, but it is constructed in such a way to really allow you to thrive and go beyond your current capabilities.
