This program is for young sailors aged 8-14 who have successfully graduated from Green Fleet, as determined by coach recommendation. It is also for those who have some prior racing experience. Sailors should enjoy time on the water and and are ready for a more competitive approach to their racing - while having fun, of course! It is an excellent opportunity to further develop their racing skills, and of course general sailing skills with CANSail levels being awarded when appropriate skills are mastered.
This youth program consists of a core eight-week program operating Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. Spring and Fall training is also strongly encouraged, available weekends, 11:00a.m. to 4:00 pm. Junior membership to ABYC is included for those participating in a full season.
Centered on the training camp atmosphere, sailors will train with an experienced race coach and will begin to develop advanced sailing skills, learn racing rules, tactics, strategy, regatta preparation, and race fitness. Once mastered, these skills will earn the participant's their CANSail Levels, 3, 4, 5 certification. Sailors are taught in racing Optimists, the international youth racing standard. At this level, students are encouraged to invest in their own equipment. However, If you do not have a boat, a charter hull may be available. Race Team members will have the opportunity to compete at various regattas in the white/blue/red championship fleets as determined by their age. Coaching fees for local regattas* are inclusive, however, registration fees for regatta host clubs are the responsibility of the sailors.
Note:
-This program requires approx. 4-6 weekends of travel and demands a considerable level of commitment from both sailors and their parents.
