Highlights from the interview

  • I had worked on education and gender during my PhD research, which marked my transition into focusing on the best environment for young girls to flourish. I have been at BSS since 2005, and I came there as the principal of the senior school. And that was my role until 2018. And then I became Head of School. This was my entry into single-sex education.

  • We are constantly rethinking our curricula to meet the evolving needs of our students. In the last 20 years, BSS has been on a really interesting trajectory, thinking seriously about what students and young women need for this world. It's not just about what students need to think, but how they think, respecting diverse thinkers, and incorporating ethical considerations into our teachings.

  • A typical day, if there is one, involves interaction with students, joining student assemblies, class discussions, and ensuring some interaction with a wider group of teachers. Our environment is dynamic, with the growth and change of students, and the dynamism of the adults in the building.

  • Research from women's colleges and girls' schools shows that students find a sense of power and autonomy, developing voice, purpose, and a path forward. BSS excels in fostering these qualities, as evidenced by alumni who have become distinguished in various fields, reflecting on the impact of their education in shaping their trajectories.

  • BSS actively connects current students with alumni through career breakfasts and the BSS Connect online platform, enabling students to explore diverse career paths and seek mentorship. These initiatives show the importance of real-world experiences and the value of networking in personal and professional development.

  • Our curriculum is designed to give students choice and voice, enabling cross-disciplinary learning and respect for various skills. This approach promotes a strong sense of respect and understanding across different disciplines, preparing students for a world that values diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary skills.

  • There isn't one typical student at BSS; rather, the school attracts those who are excited about exploring different subjects and how they intersect. The school's culture of connectedness and inclusivity ensures that all students, regardless of their backgrounds or interests, find a supportive and enriching environment. Inter-student conflict is managed proactively at BSS, with teachers, counselors, and sometimes school psychologists intervening to facilitate resolution.

  • The lively and joyful atmosphere at BSS corrects any preconceived notions of single-sex education. The school prioritizes the Reggio Emilia approach, emphasizing the unique contributions of each child and fostering a sense of ownership and participation among students, making it a vibrant and dynamic learning environment.

  • BSS maintains a strong relationship with parents through regular updates, parent education events, and active parent associations. We have also introduced virtual chats as a new, effective mode of communication, with more accessibility and engagement with the parent community.

  • I prioritize being an advocate and a leader who listens, involving myself in student life, explaining decisions, and maintaining a respectful environment. My priorities are based on mutual respect and partnership in the educational process.

  • Bishop Strachan School seeks to extend its relationships and partnerships, including with universities and local communities. Initiatives like outdoor education programs and collaborations with Ryerson University exemplify the school's commitment to experiential learning and community involvement, enhancing the educational experience by leveraging external resources and expertise.

  • Prospective parents and students are encouraged to engage in thorough research, including informal discussions with current members of the BSS community. Understanding the alignment of values between the family and the school is crucial for a mutually beneficial relationship, ensuring that the educational environment matches the student's needs and aspirations.
