Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

There is a mindset of excellence and collaboration.

Testimonies from various members of the community highlight the college's dedication to striving for excellence in every field and creating a collaborative atmosphere that brings students together across different interests and age groups.

I think that excellence, and that striving to be better, was instilled in everyone at Royal St. George’s College. If you are into drama, you act, and if you are into art, you paint, if it’s community service, do the best you can do there. That push to do whatever you do, but do it to the best of your ability, is something that is intertwined within the St. George’s community
One of the big surprises came from wanting to build a mobile app. I didn't know how to build an app, but I had all the support and mentorship from the engineering programs, to build this thing on the side. That was completely unrelated to everything else I was doing at RSGC. When I look back, the level of support was the biggest gift that I got, which gave me the autonomy and the exposure to a lot of things, allowing me to go deep into things that I'm passionate about. The support creates an environment where you feel like you can do whatever you want to do.

The atmosphere is supportive and encouraging.

Comments from alumni and students emphasize that Royal St. George's College offers extensive support and mentorship, fostering an environment where students feel empowered to explore and pursue their passions deeply.

The most 'Georgian' act that I can think of would be, in a sports game, if somebody falls down, you're the first person to go help them get up. That's what we're taught when we play sports at RSGC. You never leave a man down or leave a man behind. We're all in this together.
Excellence is encouraged, but not at the expense of support or kindness, and the fact that those can coexist really recommends the school. There is the potential for excellence at RSGC: academic excellence, sports, arts, music, to be pursued in a supportive environment. And it's important for those things not to be mutually exclusive.
My younger son is currently in Grade 10. He’s got his group of friends that are interested in sports, academics, and music, and he's really thriving there. When we started, he was in Grade 4. By the end of his first week, he said to me, 'Mom, I want my sons to go here.' So he was off to the races. I would say for the younger kids, there's almost no transition.

Opportunities for growth and collaboration are diverse.

Comments from students, parents, and alumni indicate that RSGC provides an environment where freedom to explore various interests and take on leadership roles fosters personal growth and discovery.

What I appreciate the most about my time at RSGC is the exposure it gave me to different fields and activities. It really set an amazing foundation for me to do whatever I want after leaving RSGC. I was involved in so many different sports, tennis, skiing, rugby. I was also involved heavily in the engineering program. So, academically, there was a lot of exposure there that maybe wouldn’t be at other schools. Then, with music, I was in the choir mentorship programs. I mentored junior school students, when I was in high school.
Outside of the classroom, there are a lot of outdoor education opportunities at Royal St. George’s College. Every year they do an outdoor trip where you get exposed to the wilderness. One year I went dog sledding for five days: you’re staying in yurts overnight, having to build your own fires, boil your own water. To succeed as a student, it takes that openness to grow as a person and to take on the challenges offered by the school.
Being able to see and try so many different things in my time at RSGC helped me choose my path a little bit better than maybe some of the people I know at university, who are still trying to figure out what they like.
