The big picture on North York Academy

We summarized the school ourselves

Among the relatively small, student-centred private schools, North York Academy (NYA) stands out. Its class sizes are capped at eight, which allows teachers to track each learner daily and provide targeted mini-lessons and one-to-one tutorials. The school’s calm, close-knit, and international community supports both academic focus and genuine belonging, while mentored co-curricular programs in music, art portfolio, chess, and AI & Robotics turn student interests into meaningful opportunities. NYA’s signature E.D.G.E. program offers transferable university credits and, for eligible students, accelerated consideration for Year-2/3 entry at top North American universities. With a successful track record of university placement and a reputation for responsive programming and transparent communication, the NYA appeals to families looking for a highly personalized, academically focused, and well-supported pathway to post-secondary success.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"North York Academy is a student-centred private high school in North York. We have a maximum class size of 8, so our teachers know every learner and provide genuine one-to-one support. For academics, our E.D.G.E. program offers the potential for Year-2/3 entry at top North American universities. A close-knit, global community and small-group, mentored extra-curricular activities—music ensembles, art-portfolio, chess, AI & Robotics—support growth. 100% graduation; 90% graduates admitted to first-choice university."

  • 1:8 Teacher to Student Ratio
  • 100% Graduation Rate
  • 90% Admitted to First-choice University
  • Credits transferable to University
  • The E.D.G.E. Program-An Accelerated Pathway to top North American Universities

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

What we do differently:
• Student-focused. Class sizes are capped at 8. Our teachers track progress daily, run targeted mini-lessons, and schedule short one-to-one tutorials. Students receive timely support and build steady confidence.
• Responsive programming. When a student proposes an interest, we mobilize resources and provide programs that match those interests—true to our motto, Unlocking Potential, Inspiring Growth.
• University preparation. dedicated counsellor team supports applications, essays, interviews, and scholarships. Our E.D.G.E. program offers transferable credits and, for qualified students, accelerated pathway for Year-2/3 entry at top North American universities.
• Culture. Calm, respectful, and close-knit; students are known, and families receive clear communication.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

Information not yet available.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

Information not yet available.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

Students at NYA benefit from genuine individual support in small classes—whether they’re aiming to get ahead, building confidence, or simply looking for a school that knows them well. Interests become opportunities through mentored programs in music, art-portfolio, chess, AI & Robotics and athletic development. Our international community makes it easy to form lasting friendships and learn from different perspectives. Families appreciate the attentiveness of a private education and a pragmatic and predictable path to universities

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

Information not yet available.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Information not yet available.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

Families choose NYA for a few clear reasons: the individual attention where teachers follow progress closely and adjust quickly; predictable, candid communication with families; a welcoming, international community where students settle in and make friends easily; focused, mentored co-curriculars (music ensembles, illustration/art-portfolio, chess, AI & Robotics) with real participation; and practical university guidance, with E.D.G.E. offering transferable credit—and, where appropriate, advanced standing

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

Families have clear points of contact and receive timely, candid updates, so small issues are addressed before they become stress. The other is E.D.G.E.: students earn a real university transcript with transferable credit, giving practical flexibility—and, where eligible, consideration for advanced standing—when applications begin. Both pieces matter most in the day-to-day, then pay off at the finish line.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

We’re committed to delivering what we promise, without surprises. Small class sizes so teachers learn each student quickly and schedule brief follow-ups the same week when something isn’t landing. Keeping communications transparent and timely: clear points of contact, straightforward updates, and next steps you can act on.

With E.D.G.E., we’re upfront from the start: students earn real university credit; transfer or advanced standing always depends on the receiving institution, and we’ll confirm what’s realistic before you commit. Our commitment is steady follow-through, transparent limits, and support that arrives when it’s needed.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

This year at NYA, we turned promises into action. We brought top-university admissions teams to our campus—and opened seats to neighbouring families for free—so students and parents get direct answers, not brochures. We launched E.D.G.E. with Davis University, giving students real university credits and potential Year-2/3 entry where eligible.

We invested in programs that students asked for: AI & Robotics (in rollout), music ensembles, and an illustration/portfolio studio. Every week, a hands-on paper-airplane challenge turns aerodynamics and design into play. We hosted two chess tournaments for the city’s players and rented a basketball court, opening it free to high-school athletes to support local youth. We’re also introducing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to recognize grit and service.

To keep doors open in a tougher economy, we expanded scholarship support. The goal running through all of this is simple: real access, real opportunities, and a school that stands with community

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

Information not yet available.

Gr. 11 (current) — North York Academy has been a wonderful place for both academic and personal growth. The teachers are dedicated, patient, and genuinely care about each student’s success. The small class sizes allow for personalized attention, and the school provides a welcoming atmosphere for international students as well. What truly stood out about NYA is its commitment to helping students build confidence, develop leadership skills, and prepare for university and beyond. The school’s curriculum encourages critical thinking and creativity, and the staff always go above and beyond to ensure students feel supported — both academically and emotionally. As a parent, I’ve seen how much effort the school puts into creating a strong community. The communication between staff and families is excellent, and there’s a real sense of teamwork and respect. I’m proud to be part of the NYA community and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a quality education in a caring environment.

Gr. 12 (current) — It has been quite an interesting experience, as I only started studying here at the beginning of this year. However, their teaching methods are very engaging. I think many people would easily feel sleepy during lessons because of the lectures, but here, the teachers always try to ask questions, and they are not difficult. They are the kind of questions that, the deeper you go, the more you discover answers that you yourself would not have thought of. The subjects are very great and not too stressful. I really like the business class, even though I wasn’t interested in it before. But I can see that it’s not just about business it also covers many other areas, which makes it feel less boring and keeps you interested every time you discover something new.

Gr. 12 — My experience at North York Academy as an online student was overall pretty good. The teachers were helpful and usually responded to questions within a reasonable time, which made it easier to keep up with the course. I liked the flexible schedule because it allowed me to manage my time better and work at my own pace, especially when I had multiple assignments. The lessons were generally clear, and most of the materials were easy to understand and follow. However, since it was fully online, it sometimes felt less interactive and a bit isolating compared to in-person classes. I think it would be better if there were more opportunities for student interaction. Overall, the school helped me stay focused, improve my study habits, and prepare for my next academic steps.

Gr. 11 (current) — I had an outstanding experience with this school, and I truly cannot recommend it highly enough. From the quality of teaching to the level of support provided, everything exceeded my expectations. First of all, the teachers here are incredibly responsible, dedicated, and supportive. I studied with Rebecca and Bhatt, and they made a huge impact on my learning. Whenever I had questions about homework or concepts I didn’t fully understand, they would respond very quickly and even arrange extra time to go over everything with me in detail. They never rushed explanations and always made sure I truly understood the material. It’s rare to find teachers who are this patient and genuinely invested in their students’ success. In addition, the course structure and planning are extremely well organized. I completed Grade 11 Biology, Chemistry, and Math, as well as Grade 12 English at this school. The curriculum was thoughtfully designed, with clear progression and focus on key concepts. The lessons not only helped me keep up with school, but also strengthened my understanding and improved my academic performance significantly. Thanks to their guidance, I was able to achieve strong grades and successfully gain admission to my ideal school. I also want to highlight the amazing administrative support. Sue from the admin team is incredibly efficient and helpful. Every time I had a question or needed assistance, she responded to my emails promptly and made sure everything was handled smoothly. Her professionalism and responsiveness made the entire experience even better. Overall, this school offers an exceptional combination of high-quality teaching, well-structured courses, and outstanding support. It’s clear that everyone here truly cares about students’ success. I’m very grateful for all the help I received, and I would strongly recommend this school to any student looking to improve their academic results and reach their goals.
