Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

Programs are designed for holistic development.

Observations from students and alumni indicate that Lakefield’s extracurricular programming is designed to nurture a wide array of talents, ensuring students feel valued beyond their academic achievements.

A lot of what Lakefield has to offer is balance. It’s learning how to balance your time, knowing when to get your work done so that you can go to that Spirit Event on Friday night, or they’re playing dodgeball, or they’re playing Katchewanooka Rod in the field, which is a favourite. All these different activities. So they’re learning to get their work done so they have time to have that free time as well.
I feel that something that really differentiates Lakefield is all the opportunities you get and how much the school cares about you as a person, but not just your academic activities. So when I went to Lakefield, I was like, ‘Okay, I'm going to improve math and English,’ all of those experiences that I was really afraid of. But when I got to Lakefield, they were like, ‘Okay, we really care about your academics, but we really care for your passions, your extracurricular activities.’ So they give the same importance to your extracurricular activities and your passions.
Now that they’re at Lakefield, the biggest impact that I'm seeing is our sons’ understanding of themselves, who they are, what their values are, understanding what their strengths are, what their weaknesses are, and then how to take that and use that to turn it into an opportunity to grow and move forward in their learning. That's the impact that I'm seeing. And that's across all aspects of their education. They're academics, they're social, they're emotional, and they're physical. Whether it's playing hockey or being a part of the band or taking an AP class, I see that time and time again in both boys.

There is a culture of active participation.

Accounts from students and administrators suggest that the structured opportunities for involvement make it natural for every student at Lakefield to engage in various activities, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and community-building.

The kind of student best-suited to Lakefield would be a ‘joiner.’ And in Grade 9, it’s less cool to be a joiner in a regular school, but here, there is structured time to join something. So it’s not like ‘are you going to join’ it’s ‘what are you going to join’. The choices include things such as athletics or individual sports or arts. There’s a variety, but I think the person needs to be a joiner.
There are so many choices, from sports, drama, music, visual arts to clubs such as LEAF and debate team. Students have a choice each term to switch up their choices. Sports have different levels so that everyone from the beginner to the expert can join and enjoy. Students can join as many or as few of these activities as they choose and the schedules of the activities are throughout the day and after school. This year a student (a friend of my son's) felt there should be a book club at the school. The administration and staff helped the student get one started and made sure there was space in the school and on notice boards to advertise the new initiative.
If I was to describe LCS in one word I would use Kindergarten. Remember that time in life when play-based learning, inquiry, discovery, kindness and inclusivity were quintessential to teaching and knowledge transfer? That is what LCS is - on a high school scale. Our child has appreciated this approach to learning. He finds it fun, engaging, challenging and relevant. The expectations of him go beyond the classroom block where he is encouraged to discover and nurture other talents through required clubs, sports and boarding house events. There is nothing he is disappointed with because he is invited for feedback often with resolution. For example, he finds the food tasty and reflective of the diversity on campus, which came from a feedback session he participated in.

There is lots of encouragement to explore new experiences.

Insights from alumni and current students reveal that Lakefield’s supportive environment encourages individuals to step outside their comfort zones and discover new interests, contributing to personal growth and development.

One of the things that always strikes me about the spirit of Lakefield is that you’re encouraged to do everything. I went in as a guy that loved sports, and I ended up doing a whole whack-load of school plays, and I loved every minute of it. I still got to be on the hockey team at the same time. So my advice to a student would be: Lakefield is going to offer you a lot. Take as much of it as you possibly can.
I took advantage of the school trip to Africa, and then I was lucky to go on the Yukon Canoe Expedition, which eventually led me to working up in the Northwest Territories. And it was just really incredible. And then now as a Lakefield staff member, I came back partly because I love this place, but also because I really wanted to give back to the place that gave me so much.
In Grade 11, I was lucky enough to join the Irving Expedition, which is always a canoe trip in Northern Canada, in the Territories, and that’s when I found my love for paddling and the outdoors. I ended up working up in the Northwest Territories for a canoe expedition company after that. I remember my very first time in a canoe and I just hated it. I was just so frustrated going around in circles, and the teachers at the time were very patient with me anyway. So I ended up finding some patience through the years and finding a joy for the canoe. It was pretty funny because the teacher that actually taught me how to canoe in the first place was with me on that trip many years later.

The scenic natural environment enriches extracurricular activities.

Accounts from the school community showcase the integral role of LCS’s scenic campus, from waterfront activities to outdoor classes, in enriching the educational experience and overall well-being of students.

We’re a school that does a lot for the environment, but the students felt like there were a number of areas that we could do even better. Our Co-Head Students made that their mission this year—and it was amazing. We have a program that’s committed to environmental activism called LEAF (Lakefield Environmental Action Force), and they prepared a presentation and brought it to the leadership team, so that we could do more composting and recycling in all of our twelve houses. And the students raised it, we talked about it, our students took it on, and they saw that one through.
Lakefield's value of outdoors every day is something that our sons have embraced and they've loved. They've stayed with the outdoor ed program all the way along through all their years at LCS.
Our focus when looking at schools was academics, and he happened to be an athletic kid. So Lakefield was a good fit, and he was able to play hockey outdoors and join a team and do all of that. So when we visited, it was initially because of hockey. That very quickly changed when we drove onto campus and saw what he was about to sort of dive into.
