The big picture on IMG Academy

We summarized the school ourselves

IMG Academy is a prestigious sports education and training institution founded in 1978 by tennis coach Nick Bollettieri. It has grown into a comprehensive athletic and academic facility situated across 600 acres. The Academy offers a college preparatory boarding school for Grades 6-12 and post-graduate programs, providing a balanced approach to academics and athletics. The academy is renowned for its athletic training programs in multiple sports, including baseball, basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. It has a notable track record of producing professional and Olympic athletes. Distinct features of the campus include state-of-the-art training facilities and equipment, as well as on-campus accommodation for boarding students. The student body is diverse, with students from 63 countries and a total enrollment of over 1,300 students. IMG Academy reports impressive SAT and ACT scores. IMG Academy's integrated approach to athletic and personal development prepares student-athletes for both college and professional careers. By combining rigorous academics with intensive sports training, it creates a unique environment for students to excel in their studies and chosen sports.

We questioned the school administration

1. Who are you, as a school?

"Established in 1978 by renowned tennis coach Nick Bollettieri, IMG Academy traces its roots back to humble beginnings as a tennis-focused institution in Bradenton, Fla. Over the years, IMG Academy has transitioned from being a sports-only elite tennis training program, into a powerful multi-sport, holistic education institution, incorporating strong academic and personal development curriculum. Today, IMG Academy stands alone in its unique and holistic approach to student-athlete development."

2. What do you do differently and uniquely well?

We integrate academics, athletics, and personal development in a way that few schools can. The school day, training environment, residential life, academic support, and college-placement process are designed around the whole student-athlete. We combine expert teachers, sport-specific coaches, performance specialists, personal-development coaches, and college-planning staff on one campus, with the shared goal of preparing students for college and life beyond sport. Our staff-to-student ratio is 4:1. We offer 15 sports and maintain a 100% college acceptance rate.

3. What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

We are not a conventional independent school with athletics added on. We are a sports-education institution. Our environment is more structured, more performance-oriented, and more demanding than many traditional schools. There is a daily rhythm built around training, academics, personal development, competition, recovery, and accountability. This level of specialization requires a corresponding financial commitment, and tuition varies by sport and by the comprehensive nature of the programming and resources provided.

4. What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

The first was our founding in 1978 by Nick Bollettieri as a tennis academy. That original culture of immersion, discipline, and elite coaching remains with us. The second was our evolution from a tennis-only institution into a multi-sport boarding school with academics and personal development at the centre. The third was the development of online coaching and college-recruiting services. Our 2023 acquisition by BPEA EQT, in partnership with Nord Anglia Education, positioned IMG for wider global expansion.

5. What type of student is a good fit for your school?

A good-fit student is a dedicated, motivated athlete who wants to be challenged academically, athletically, and personally. They are also comfortable with structure, feedback, competition, independence, and a diverse international community. They are willing to be coached not only in their sport but in leadership, resilience, communication, and how they respond to pressure.

6. Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

We would advise against IMG if the student is not motivated by sport, is looking primarily for a traditional academic boarding school, or is not ready for the independence and accountability of a residential performance environment. We would also caution families that the student may need a slower-paced, less competitive, or more locally rooted school experience. IMG can be transformational for the right student, but it is not meant to be a general-purpose school for every family.

7. To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

Families choose IMG because they want an integrated pathway for their children’s development, which includes strong academics, serious athletic training, personal development, and college placement in one environment. They are often looking for a school that understands the demands of high-level sport and can support college recruitment without compromising academic preparation. Our College Planning and Placement Department supports students with college admissions, test preparation, NCAA requirements, and athletic recruitment, and IMG’s relationship with NCSA gives students access to a major recruiting network used by college programs and coaches.

8. How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

IMG Academy is seen as one of the most recognizable names in youth sports development, associated with elite, ambitious, global athletes and strongly linked to college and professional athletic pathways.

9. What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

Our personal-development curriculum is underappreciated. Many people know IMG for athletic performance, but the deeper work is helping students develop the habits and mindset that make long-term success possible: resilience, confidence, leadership, focus, commitment, nutrition, mental performance, and handling pressure. We see sport as a platform for life, not simply as a pathway to scholarships or professional opportunities.

10. What might families find surprising about your school?

Families may be surprised by how much support surrounds the student-athlete outside of training. IMG is not only fields, courts, and gyms. It includes academic support, tutoring, a Learning Resource Center, ESL support, college planning, residential mentors, 24/7 safety and security, on-campus health services through Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and student-life programming. The environment is intense, but it is also intentionally built to support students academically, socially, medically, and personally.

11. What improvements or changes has your school made recently?

We have continued to invest in academic rigour, student life, campus facilities, and global reach. In 2024–2025, IMG reported 470 students enrolled in multiple AP courses, 969 AP exams taken, and 21 AP courses offered. We have also expanded the Campus Center, with plans including new dining options, student-life spaces, private dining rooms, a convenience store, a larger bookstore, and an expanded Johns Hopkins Health Services location.

12. How will your school change in the next 5 years?

We expect IMG to become more global, more digitally connected, and more expansive in its definition of sports education. The Bradenton campus will remain our heartbeat, but IMG Academy+ and NCSA allow us to reach student-athletes beyond campus. There is also an opportunity to bring elements of IMG’s sports, wellbeing, resilience, teamwork, and leadership curriculum to students worldwide. At the same time, we expect to keep strengthening the boarding school experience itself: academics, campus life, facilities, athletic development, personal development, and college placement.
