Greenwood's university placement program supports informed decision-making.

Students and alumni highlight Greenwood's comprehensive university placement and counselling program, where experienced counsellors guide students in navigating the application process, improving their credentials, and selecting the right university fit.

At the end of Grade 10, my guidance counsellor at Greenwood encouraged me to apply for the Shad Valley program—it’s a month-long STEM enrichment program at different universities. I went to UBC in July 2015 and learned a lot—not just about engineering but also business, working in labs, and being around students who were like-minded. That was the first time I really heard about engineering as a university program. My parents are both lawyers, so science wasn’t really something I heard about from them. After that, I took mostly math and science electives in Grades 11 and 12. My guidance counsellor in Grade 12 really pushed me to consider engineering. I was deciding between U of T and Western, and between my parents and my teachers, I was encouraged to think about the challenge of engineering science at U of T. I ended up switching to civil engineering later, but Greenwood—especially the teachers—played a huge role in getting me there.
The university placement and counselling at Greenwood are quite elaborate and resourceful. I was looking at several different schools and wondering how to best present my credentials, and our admissions counsellor (again, Ms. Herod) was invaluable. She has worked extensively in admissions and has experience on the “other side of the fence.’ This experience allowed her to give me insights into the process, how admissions officers think, and about my application quality that family and friends just don’t have. The counsellor provided an objective voice regarding my overall package, how to sell myself and how to overcome my perceived weaknesses. She also helped me prepare for interviews, edit essays, and evaluate the “fit” of a school based on my credentials. Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it. Therefore students must be well prepared but to do this alone is difficult. This next step was a life-changing opportunity, therefore I needed to make a well-informed decision which I believe I did with the help of the placement program
I have two Greenwood grads who are in university, and I can confidently say that Greenwood has prepared them well. Not only were the education, teaching methods, and course content great, but so was the preparation as far as them being responsible for their learning and organization. Both of my kids are in different university programs (Science and Business), and they feel that their Greenwood teachers and the courses offered prepared them for their programs in the university. The Advisor program at Greenwood also prepared them well. Students have their Advisor group all the way through Greenwood. In grades 7-9, they discuss many things, including organizational skills, study skills, what type of learning is best for them, learning to advocate for themselves and to follow up with teachers when needed, etc. In grades 10-12, they continue with that but start to focus more on preparing for post-secondary and figuring out what interests them and making sure they take the courses they will need for their area of interest. This attention to organizing and preparing them helps the student become more confident in their abilities to manage and advocate for themselves in post-secondary life.

A balanced curriculum equips students for both academic and personal success.

Insights from students and parents reveal that Greenwood's diverse curriculum, which includes Advanced Placement courses, unique art programs, and practical life lessons, prepares students for university and beyond by fostering effective study habits, responsibility, character development, and adaptability.

I graduated from Greenwood in 2017, and since then, I’ve been studying civil engineering at the University of Toronto. I just finished my third year, and I’m starting a 12-month internship co-op with Ontario Power Generation. I’ll head back to school to finish my fourth year in the fall of 2021. I’m involved in a couple of design teams at U of T—I'm on the concrete canoe executive team and also part of the seismic design team, which takes up a lot of time. I work part-time in a water microbiology lab focused on mining wastewater, and I also lifeguard and teach swimming lessons at the pool. So that all keeps me pretty busy.
The work at Greenwood is challenging enough to teach us a lot and help us learn, but also not too difficult for most students. Another thing I love about Greenwood is that the work we do in many classes helps us prepare for later in our lives (university, adulthood, etc.). For example, in math class in grade 9, we learned how to do taxes, how to buy properties and how to buy cars. For me, this is very important as it helps me best prepare for my future.
I do believe (and know firsthand from my second-year university daughter and now my grade 12 son going to university next September) that the school prepares kids well for post-secondary life. My daughter was well prepared for her Medical Sciences program at UWO, and my son seems prepared for his co-op Business program at Dalhousie (with his high school math courses, his 4+ business courses in grades 11 and 12, etc.).

Engaging learning environments develop critical communication and collaboration skills.

Students emphasize that Greenwood's focus on teamwork and interactive assignments cultivates essential communication and collaboration skills, providing a solid foundation for future academic and personal success.

The collaborative nature of the school was another defining feature. We did many group projects and presentations, and there was constant interaction among students. This emphasis on teamwork helped me develop communication and collaboration skills that stood out when I transitioned to university. Greenwood’s environment prepared me well to present myself, meet new people, and work effectively in groups—skills that many peers from other schools seemed to lack.
