Qualitative insights

These insights are based on conversations with parents, alumni, and school leadership. Handpicked and curated by our editor, they offer a close look at how the school is experienced and perceived by those who know it best.

There is wide range of opportunities.

Observations from students and alumni indicate that Crescent School offers diverse extracurricular options that allow students to explore various interests and find their niche, fostering holistic personal development.

There’s just so much packed into the Crescent community, so many different niches that you can find yourself in. There are people who are interested in music. There are people who are interested in fine arts. There are people who are interested in sports. And they go on to do these things at a very high level. People find a place for themselves at Crescent, and you have all this abundant opportunity. It just kind of felt like a playground where you could pick and choose what you wanted and safely try things out.
Some schools are big athletic schools, others might specialize in drama. One thing that’s really strong about Crescent is it’s a bit of everything. For me, growing up, I had trouble just fitting myself into one category of interests. So I did the plays at Crescent. I was part of the hockey team. I was also doing some basketball growing up. And then I did music, and leadership. I wanted to do as much as I possibly could, and there was really an opportunity to do anything I wanted to do. I was able to find myself in that school and have it carry through to my life today.
Our older son really loved the robotics program at Crescent. It is an exceptionally respected program. It's not just, ‘Oh, we have a robotics extracurricular program.’ This is a top-notch program that you can take great pride in. He worked hard to get into it. The facilities for it, the guidance is second to none; he loves that. Also, just being in an extracurricular program that is so intense has taught him a lot about how to juggle things.

Character development and community engagement are emphasized.

Comments from parents and students highlight Crescent School's commitment to character development and community engagement, as seen through initiatives like Character in Action and various outreach programs.

Crescent obviously values a great education, but I think they also value character and community. They have something called Character in Action, which is their way of exposing the boys to opportunities to help them develop character outside of the classroom. They have had plenty of outreach opportunities for the kids, such as clothing and food drives. They did toy drives during the holidays. Our older son also had an outreach co-curricular club, which he really enjoyed. It was called the Best Buddies Program. It's a way for them to connect with intellectually challenged individuals and form friendships and do something outside of the box.
The character education is very unique and useful. There are four pillars— Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Compassion. Kids are friendly to each other. Every new kid can easily find a friend on the first day to Crescent school. The STEM education is very strong too. My kids especially love the robotics. From Grade 6 the school has robotics training as part of science subject. They also enjoy being part of various sports teams. School also cares about their mental development. Students are required to sleep well, training well, eat well, and keep mentally healthy (another unique STEM program). Students are caring because they can feel and appreciate the caring from school. Life at Crescent is very healthy, fulfilling and meaningful.

Dedicated educators enhance the activities.

Observations from parents and alumni indicate that Crescent School's educators are not only exceptional in their teaching abilities but also deeply invested in the overall development and well-being of their students.

One common theme on what our sons appreciate most about the school would have to be the teachers. In each year, each of our kids has found a teacher or a mentor who has gone above and beyond to connect with our son or develop a special relationship, whether it's based on interest or as a coach with sports. The teachers are just phenomenal. They really care. They really take the time to get to know your child and really appreciate how different they are, their uniqueness, and support them.
We've really had a great experience with the teachers. They're a really talented group. They're just great educators, and I feel the kids are all getting a terrific education. But more importantly, I think they're really good role models and good mentors, and they really care about the boys. They pay attention to how the kids are doing. They're interested in their well-being and making sure that they're doing well as people, not just as students, and that they're thriving in the school beyond just the academics; that socially, things are going well. They're fitting in well with friends. They're getting involved in extracurriculars. It really is a broad approach that's centred on making sure the boys are doing well in all aspects of school.
