Students Give Back to Community

Woodland raises over $12,000 in 10 days for the ministry of Ray of Hope in Kitchener. Lunch auctions, "slimings" and pancake breakfast pay off. Students spent Special Emphasis Week learning about homelessness, poverty, and special needs within the Kitchener Waterloo Community. They were challenged throughout the week about how they could be part of the solution and not the cause. The student government organizes events and a cause on a yearly basis. The money raised is student money and they give generously to the causes they are presented.

A highlight of this year's event was the "slimings" where different teachers had money jars that contributions found their way into. At the end of the week, the Teacher with the most money in their jar was slimed. The student government president was also slimed as a direct result of his "encouragement" to slime a particular teacher.

Students also participate in Ray of Hope's "Coldest Night of the Year" walk, collecting donations that go directly to the ministry.

Each year a student on Arts Council designs a themed t-shirt for Special Emphasis Week. Gywneth (Gr. 12) designed this year's shirt.
