A group of nine senior students at London Christian High designed and constructed a Mobile Classroom for a primary school in Tanzania. Partnering with Hope Story, an organization serving orphans and vulnerable children, the Design Block class developed a plan to support children in the Digo community attending Amani Primary School – located in the Tanga region of Tanzania – in their need for updated technology to help students learn and expand their skills.
Under the direction of Design Block teacher Matt Rock, the class retrofitted a 40’ steel shipping container with windows and doors, equipped with built-in desks and seating, and wired for the lighting, computers, and air conditioning. Each student was responsible for a core element of the project – welding, design, IT, electrical, lighting, flooring, security, insulation, furniture making – and also led the research, design and implementation for their assigned area, developing expertise and leadership along the way.
While the scale of this student-led project was immense, Mr. Rock and his students were grateful for the support of the London Christian High community and many local business in providing funds, supplies and volunteer hours to successfully complete the classroom. The design and construction were completed in June 2019, and the shipping container finally arrived in Tanga in August 2020.
