- Canada has about 1,700 private and independent schools, with about 280,000 students. One out of every 18 children in Canada, or 5.6 percent, attended a private elementary or secondary school in 1998-99. The enrolment level remains in the same range.
- The proportion of children who come from households with an annual income of $50,000 to $100,000 was about the same in both private and public schools—45 percent—in 1998-99.
- All private schools must register with the government education ministry or department in their province or territory, but this doesn’t necessarily mean schools are formally inspected.
- Private secondary schools granting credits must have their curriculum assessed by the provincial education authorities.
