The hidden value of camps for Christian families

Time at any camp is demonstrably beneficial to kids’ and teens’ personal growth. Studies like that done by the American Camp Association (ACA) in 2005, for example, show that camp’s impact extends several months beyond the immediate experience.¹ In the case of Christian camps, this extends to the faith development kids and teens experience at camp.

The Effective Camp Research Project confirms that there is a “camp high” experience by kids at Christian summer camps. Survey respondents admitted “temporary increases in general happiness and agreement with doctrinal standards.”² The immersion in the experience, that is, sharing stories, singing songs together, discussing issues with peers can be critical to camp graduates’ development of a personal faith. The experience is compellingly unique. Research confirms that the majority of attendees take to this uniqueness and benefit from it. Even kids with some initial resistance or shyness overcome this and reap the benefits.

On the other hand, some benefits are indeed typical to all camp experiences, such as the following:

The encouragement of independence. Kids learn on their own in situations that challenge them personally.
Firsthand encounters with nature help them develop a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
They build skills through hands-on experience — more so at some Christian day camps perhaps — that build skills they’ll use in the adult world.

Choosing the right camp starts with assessing your child’s needs and interests, then searching for a camp that fulfills your family’s overall beliefs and interests as well. Additionally, you may want to think about whether you prefer a camp close to home and what kinds of activities your child or teen would enjoy most during their stay.
