UCC wins championship in six spring sports

Upper Canada College tennis, cricket, rowing, rugby, softball and track and field teams and athletes all captured championships in the recently completed spring sports season.

UCC’s varsity rugby team was the most dominant by going undefeated in capturing both the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) Senior Boys National Rugby Tournament and the Conference of Independent Schools Athletics Association (CISAA) championship. This was the first time the team had won those titles since 1999 and 2011 respectively.

UCC beat St. Andrew’s College 40-5 in the CAIS final and Crescent School 33-17 in the CISAA final.

“For the first time in recent memory, we had multiple national team athletes competing for us as well: Alex Hickman ’19 (Canada U18) and Connor McKinney ’19 (Canada U20),” says head coach Andrew McCubbin. “A number of the boys will also playing university rugby next year at Dalhousie, McGill, Western and Guelph.”

UCC’s varsity cricket team won its fifth consecutive CISAA championship with a seven-wicket victory over St. Andrew’s College, which gave the team an undefeated 4-0 record in league play.

UCC’s varsity rowing team entered nine events and finished fifth in the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association (School Boy) National Championships. The team was led by the senior 4+ crew of Raphael Berz, Dane Halkiw, Luka Pusic, Matthew Thompson and coxie Thomas Rusaw, which won a gold medal. The senior 8+ crew earned a silver medal in its final.

While UCC’s varsity tennis team finished second in CISAA, two of its doubles teams performed very well in the next level up at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament. The high school doubles pairing of Charlie Dunbar and James Kingsmill won gold and the open doubles team of Gijs Noteboom and Roy Taguchi won bronze.

UCC’s U16 tennis team won its seventh CISAA title in 10 years by winning four of five matches against St. Andrew’s College in the final.

UCC’s U14 (Year 8) tennis team won the CISAA championship with 95 points. It was followed by UCC’s U14 (Year 7) team, which finished second with 75 points.

While UCC’s varsity track and field team qualified 29 athletes for the OFSAA Metro Regionals and nine more who performed well enough to move on to OFSAA, the biggest performance was by the junior boys 4x100-metre relay team of Colin O’Dwyer, Lucas Mouzitchka, Michael Wilson and Jason Lee, which won the Metro championship.

At the Prep School, UCC’s U12 and U13 track and field teams both won CISAA championships. Combined with the U10 team finishing second and the U11 team coming in fifth, the Blues claimed the CISAA boys overall track and field championship. Jay Bailey in U10 discus, Ashlin Barry in the U12 1,500 metres race, Theo Russell in U13 long jump and Sam Sipos in U14 discus all broke school records.

UCC’s U12A softball team won the U12 D1 CISAA championship after an undefeated season that was capped off with an 11-5 win over Sterling Hall School in the final.
