Beside the development of oral expression and written message reception, we believe the development of writing expression as important in terms of building language and communication competence starting with the primary grades.
In order for the child to develop capacity of writing expression, emphasis should be placed on:
1.We refer to calligraphy and orthography as and propose to work on the development of:
1a- graphic element drawing to facilitate the preparation of the writing process through activities such as, writing letters, syllables, words and sentences; exercises of writing letters of the same size and differentiating capital from small letters (without grammatical reference); exercises of aligning hand-written text on page, spacing words, titles, paragraphs; exercises of positioning the hand/body to write comfortably
1b- correct, legible, and neat short sentence writing through activities such as, writing correctly words and sentences; building short sentences using given words (writing in context); recognizing the correct word order in a sentence; establishing grammatical agreement (intuitively); exercises of writing correctly groups of sounds without reference to vowels and consonants (e.g., – ea; –oa; –ou; –ph; –sh; –ch); exercises of error self-correction
We understand the use of language conventions as and propose to work on the development of:
2a- sentence punctuation through activities such as, using different punctuation marks (e.g., comma, question mark, capital letters) and placing them correctly in text; exercises of using proper nouns, interrogative and declarative sentences (without grammatical terminology); word/sentence dictation (not utilizing entire text)
We refer to interest for writing as and propose to work on the development of:
3a- cross-word self-creation
3b- class writing contests to encourage individual/group work
3c- class writing projects to personalize/exhibit individual/group writing
