AP Results Exceed Provincial Standings

St. Andrew’s College students have once again placed exceptionally well in the Advanced Placement (AP) program. As an AP school, grade 11 and 12 students who opt to take these university-level courses are rewarded with a leg-up into post-secondary study.

In June, 137 AP exams were written by 78 students in 17 subjects. Results show 91% of exams taken by our students were scored at 3 or higher on a 5-point scale. This compares with 80% in Ontario, and 60% globally.

“Students have maintained the excellent standard set last year, when 93% of exams written by our AP students scored a 3 or higher,” says Stuart Swan, Head of University Counselling,

Research shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams typically experience greater academic success in university and have higher university graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

Eighteen of the 78 students earned AP Scholar status, and nine of them are in the Class of 2017. Three students earned AP Scholar with Honours: Sigeng Liu '16 (University of Toronto), Filip Grantcharov ’17, and JP Martin '17.

Four students in the Class of 2016 earned National AP Scholar status: Jared Chai (University of Michigan), Tiger Wang (University of Chicago), Alex Xu (Purdue University), and Gary Zhou (Brown University).

Since AP results are cumulative over the grade 11 and 12 years, we can expect to see many SAC students receive AP Scholar status again next year, Mr. Swan says.

“These exams are a real measure of a student’s ability and motivation to excel in university-level courses and to writing three-hour university-length exams.”
