The academics will prepare the students for high school. The kids have learned the various skills they need for success. They take their work seriously and the teachers respond in kind. I think there might be a possibility of moving a little quicker and being a bit more exacting in writing and in math facts, however that's a fine balance to walk with kids. I have never, at any time, felt like a teacher wasn't doing their job or was not fulfilling their responsibility. The school is a Christian school, and I find the teachers are quite intentional about working that into that into their teaching in a fluid way. I like how science, for example, is taught as creation studies.
I would describe the academic culture as, I can. John Knox takes the time to help each student reach their potential. I believe that their academics are stronger than the public school system and it is one of the reasons we have remained at John Knox. I think my children will be better prepared for their next steps in life as they will have both the classroom academics, but also have been involved in other leadership opportunities. The project based learning model has taught my children presentation skills, teamwork, research skills, project management, and presentation skills. John Knox is excellent at teaching children to read! The have a strong reading program that makes reading fun, but also challenges the student improve their reading. Both my children absolutely love to read thanks to John Knox!
