Now with seven locations throughout the GTA, it has all the benefits that come from a larger administration team, while also maintaining a close-knit, community feel at each of the schools. Teachers are skilled, qualified, and engaging. A strong core Montessori program is augmented with language instruction, including Mandarin, and music beginning at the toddler level. "Vancouver Waldorf School offers a developmentally appropriate, experiential, and academically rigorous approach to education. To enhance and enrich learning, arts are integrated with all academic disciplines from preschool through twelfth grade. Waldorf education aims to inspire life-long learning in all students and enable them to fully develop their unique capacities. The principles of Waldorf education evolve from an understanding of human development that addresses the needs of the growing child.
The curriculum is not simply made up of subjects to be read about and tested—they are experienced. Through these experiences, Waldorf students cultivate their intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual capacities to be individuals certain of their paths and be of service to the world."

"At Vancouver Waldorf School, our strategic tradeoffs reflect a deep commitment to holistic education over conventional metrics of academic success. We prioritize creative and experiential learning, which sometimes means less emphasis on technology integration and standardized testing. This approach fosters deep thinkers and lifelong learners but may differ from more traditional schools focused on frequent technological use and test scores. Our choice to focus on arts, practical skills, and personal development ensures our students are well-rounded, empathetic, and equipped to meet diverse challenges rather than merely excelling in a test-driven environment. These decisions shape a school culture that values individual growth and community connection over competitive achievement."

"Vancouver Waldorf School’s story began in 1967 when three families in West Vancouver shared a vision for Waldorf education. By 1969, a kindergarten was established, and in 1971, the school officially opened with 12 students. A significant expansion occurred in 1981 with the launch of high school programs, allowing students to continue their Waldorf education through adolescence.
In 1976, the school relocated to its current North Vancouver locations, solidifying its presence in the community. The 1990s saw further growth with the construction of new classrooms, and in 2005, a new early childhood center was added to serve the needs of a growing community. The school has since expanded its cultural footprint, with the Festival of the Arts and other seasonal events becoming key traditions.
As we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2021, these milestones reflect our enduring commitment to providing a holistic education that nurtures the whole child."

"Vancouver Waldorf School is best suited for students and families who value a holistic education that emphasizes intellectual, emotional, and creative development. Ideal students are those curious about the world, eager to engage in hands-on learning, and open to exploring their artistic and academic abilities in a cooperative environment. Our approach resonates deeply with families who prioritize personal growth, cultural richness, and environmental consciousness over just pure competitive academic achievements. Parents who support a delayed introduction to digital technology and favour a curriculum that integrates arts, music, and movement will find our school aligns well with their educational goals. Families seeking a tight-knit community that nurtures mutual respect, collaboration, and individuality will see their children flourish here."

"Vancouver Waldorf School may not be the ideal choice for families seeking a traditional education model focused on standardized testing and competitive academic ranking. Our curriculum emphasizes holistic development over test scores, which might not align with the priorities of those who prefer a more conventional academic structure. Additionally, our approach includes a deliberate reduction in early technology use, which may not suit families who value early digital literacy as a core component of schooling. Our community-oriented and collaborative environment may also differ from expectations for families looking for highly structured, discipline-focused educational settings. If a family prioritizes a rigid and technology-intensive curriculum, they may find that our emphasis on arts, creativity, and social development does not meet their specific educational goals."

"Families choose Vancouver Waldorf School for its holistic approach that nurtures the whole child—intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. Our balanced curriculum integrates arts, practical skills, and academics, fostering creativity and critical thinking. Parents value our minimal early exposure to technology and a strong emphasis on experiential learning, offering a hands-on educational experience.
The school’s close-knit community and commitment to individualized attention are also key reasons families prefer us. They appreciate the nurturing environment where each child is supported and encouraged to explore their passions. Our philosophy of meeting children at their developmental stage, combined with our focus on community and environmental stewardship, distinguishes us from traditional schools, making us the top choice for those seeking a well-rounded, alternative education."

"Vancouver Waldorf School is widely recognized for its commitment to a holistic educational philosophy that integrates intellectual, emotional, and creative development. In the public eye, our school is most prominently seen as a nurturing environment that emphasizes the growth of the whole child — head, heart, and hands — rather than focusing solely on academic achievements. This reputation is underpinned by our distinctive approach that incorporates arts, crafts, music, and movement into everyday learning, supporting students to develop a balanced set of skills and values. Our emphasis on minimal use of technology in early education and the development of critical thinking and social skills through collaborative and experiential learning are attributes that resonate in our community. This image aligns closely with our identity as a school that prepares well-rounded individuals who are ready to contribute thoughtfully and creatively to society."

"An often underappreciated aspect of Vancouver Waldorf School is our commitment to fostering strong interpersonal relationships and community engagement. While our holistic educational approach is well-known, the depth of our community involvement—from local environmental projects to cultural festivals—may not be fully recognized for its impact. This engagement not only enriches the student experience but also cultivates a sense of social responsibility and connectedness that extends beyond the classroom. Families may see these activities but might not fully appreciate how they enhance learning outcomes and develop well-rounded, empathetic individuals who are prepared to actively participate in and contribute to their communities."

"One aspect of Vancouver Waldorf School that might surprise families is the intensity and depth of our academic rigor, which is often masked by our strong emphasis on arts and holistic development. While many initially perceive our school as primarily arts-focused, they soon discover that our curriculum robustly integrates traditional academic subjects with artistic and practical skills in a way that deeply enhances understanding and retention. This balanced approach not only fosters creativity but also cultivates a high level of intellectual engagement and critical thinking. Families are often pleasantly surprised to find that their children develop a strong foundation in sciences, mathematics, and humanities, complemented by their artistic and practical achievements, leading to a well-rounded and comprehensive education that prepares students exceptionally well for higher education and beyond."

"Our school has established partnerships with local community members and organizations to offer students real-world experiences and perspectives that enhance their understanding of different cultures and communities. This includes workshops and guest speakers who specialize in various areas, providing our students and staff with valuable insights and learning opportunities.
We’ve also emphasized professional development for our faculty, implementing regular training sessions that focus on the latest educational strategies and Waldorf methodologies. This ensures that our teachers are equipped to provide the best possible education to our students, staying true to our core values while adapting to new educational trends."

"Recently, in collaboration with the BC Collective of Waldorf Schools, we have implemented a revised literacy assessment program to better gather data and improve instruction, ensuring we meet the diverse needs of our students. Additionally, we have introduced ‘calm-and-reset’ spaces within each classroom, along with a central student reset space, to support students who may become disregulated during the school day.
Over the next five years and beyond, Vancouver Waldorf School plans to enhance its high school program and undertake significant infrastructure improvements across all our facilities. These enhancements, combined with the future focus on expanding our campuses, will ensure that our students continue to receive a rich, well-rounded education in a refreshed and supportive environment."

Particularly popular in the younger grades (preschool to elementary), but sometimes available all the way up to high school, Montessori schools offer an alternative vision to the standard lesson format of most classrooms. Instead of listening to whole-class lessons, Montessori classrooms allow students to choose which "tasks" or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles - their essential feature being they contain a right answer and allow for selfcorrection. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on lessons being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with students developing a sense of self-sufficiency, confidence and curiosity.
Waldorf schools are available from preschool to Grade 12, though they are most popular at the younger ages. Waldorf schools are unmistakably "progressive". Rudolf Steiner, their intellectual forefather, believed the educator's first task should be to help students develop an aesthetic appreciation for life and learning. Sometimes incorrectly conflated with Montessori schools, Waldorf schools focus on developing the "whole child" - emphasizing collaborative, hands-on learning, along with the arts and music, which are integrated into other areas of study.

Using the Waldorf curriculum, Vancouver Waldorf School transforms education into an art that nurtures the whole child—head, heart, and hands. Our teachers introduce skills, subjects, and concepts in alignment with the child’s physiological, emotional, and spiritual development, ensuring that learning is meaningful and relevant. A multi-sensory approach integrates the arts into every subject, engaging students fully in the learning process rather than focusing solely on intellectual information. In the high school, the curriculum emphasizes the development of creative and independent thinking, with all subjects drawing on students’ capacities for analytical thought and judgment. Our rich curriculum encompasses academic, artistic, and movement-based courses, preparing students to think critically and act creatively in all aspects of their lives.
Equal Balance
These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.
Information not available
At Vancouver Waldorf School, mathematics is taught through a blend of creative thinking and practical application. Early education focuses on developing a strong foundation in basic arithmetic through rhythmical activities and hands-on experiences, such as counting games and movement-based learning. As students progress, they engage with more abstract concepts through real-world applications, such as geometry through art or algebra in relation to music. This approach ensures that students not only understand mathematical concepts but also see their relevance and beauty in the world around them.
Balanced Literacy
Balanced reading programs are typically Whole Language programs with supplementary phonics training. This training might be incidental, or it might take the form of mini-lessons.
Information not available
Early reading at Vancouver Waldorf School is introduced gradually, respecting each child’s developmental readiness. Stories, songs, and oral storytelling play a significant role in building language skills before formal reading instruction begins. The introduction of letters is often linked to images, stories, and movement, helping children connect with the symbolic meaning of written language. This method fosters a deep love for reading and a solid foundation in literacy.
Equal balance
Programs that balance systematic and process approaches equally likely have an emphasis on giving young students ample opportunities to write, while providing supplementary class-wide instruction in grammar, parts of sentences, and various writing strategies.
Information not available
Writing is integrated with the development of fine motor skills and artistic expression. Students begin by learning to form letters through drawing and painting, which naturally leads to the development of handwriting. Writing is also connected to storytelling, allowing students to express themselves creatively while mastering the technical aspects of writing. This approach emphasizes the beauty of written language and its role as a powerful tool for communication.
Inquiry
Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. Students still learn foundational scientific ideas and content (and build on this knowledge progressively); however, relative to expository science instruction, inquiry-based programs have students spend more time developing and executing their own experiments (empirical and theoretical). Students are frequently challenged to develop critical and scientific-thinking skills by developing their own well-reasoned hypothesis and finding ways to test those hypotheses. Projects and experiments are emphasized over textbook learning. Skills are emphasized over breadth of knowledge.
Information not available
Science education at Vancouver Waldorf School is rooted in observation and experiential learning. In the early grades, students explore the natural world through hands-on activities, nature walks, and gardening. As they advance, the curriculum introduces more structured scientific inquiry, encouraging students to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions. The approach is interdisciplinary, often linking science with arts and humanities, fostering a holistic understanding of the world.

Expanding Communities
The Expanding Communities approach organizes the curriculum around students’ present, everyday experience. In the younger grades, students might learn about themselves, for example. As they move through the grades, the focus gradually broadens in scope: to the family, neighbourhood, city, province, country, and globe. The curriculum tends to have less focus on history than Core Knowledge programs.
Information not available
Social studies in the lower grades focus on understanding the world through storytelling and experiential activities. Students learn about different cultures, histories, and geographies by engaging in hands-on projects, festivals, and role-playing activities that bring these subjects to life. The goal is to foster a sense of connection to humanity and the environment, laying the groundwork for more complex studies in later grades.
Equal Balance
Not applicable
These programs represent an equal balance between the perennialist and pragmatic approach to teaching the humanities and social sciences.
Information not available
For older students, humanities and social sciences emphasize critical thinking and independent inquiry. The curriculum includes history, geography, and social studies, often taught in an interdisciplinary manner that encourages connections between past and present, theory and practice. Students engage with complex texts, conduct research, and participate in discussions and debates that hone their analytical skills and deepen their understanding of human society.
Equal Balance
These programs feature an equal blend of the audio-lingual and communicative styles of language instruction.
Information not available
Foreign languages are introduced early, with a focus on immersion and cultural appreciation. Students learn through songs, games, and stories, emphasizing listening and speaking skills before moving on to reading and writing. This method helps students internalize the language naturally and fosters a deeper understanding of different cultures.

Creative
Creative arts programs are studio-driven. While historical works and movements may still be taught to add context to the program, students mainly engage in making art (visual, musical, theatrical, etc). The goal is use the actual practice of art to help educate students’ emotions, cognition, and ethos.
Information not available
Fine arts are integral to the Waldorf curriculum, with daily opportunities for artistic expression in drawing, painting, music, and drama. Art is not only a subject but also a method of learning across disciplines. Through the arts, students develop creativity, emotional expression, and aesthetic awareness, which enhances their overall educational experience.

Light integration
Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.
Information not available
In line with Waldorf education philosophy, Vancouver Waldorf School introduces technology in a thoughtful and age-appropriate manner. While the early grades focus on hands-on, experiential learning without screens, technology is gradually introduced into the curriculum in the upper grades through a Cyber Civics course. Technology (e.g. desktop and laptops) is only used as a learning tool more prominently in high school. This ensures that students develop essential digital literacy skills while maintaining a balanced and healthy approach to technology use.

Physical education at Vancouver Waldorf School emphasizes movement, rhythm, and games that develop physical coordination, teamwork, and a love for active living. Activities are often linked to cultural traditions and seasonal festivals, reinforcing the connection between physical activity and the broader curriculum. Additionally, outdoor trips at Vancouver Waldorf High School are an exciting and integral component of the curriculum. These trips support the development of practical skills as well as positive character traits in students including respect, responsibility, helpfulness, independence, self-confidence, self-discipline, interpersonal skills, courage and leadership.
Waldorf
Montessori programs aimed at preschool and Kindergarten- aged children allow young learners to choose which “tasks” or activities interest them. These tasks centre around special Montessori puzzles -- the essential features of these puzzles being they contain a “right answer” and allow for self-correction. A strong emphasis is therefore placed on learning being concrete and rooted in practical experience, along with children developing a sense of self-sufficiency and confidence. Specially trained teachers act as guides, introducing children to progressively more difficult materials when appropriate. A Montessori classroom is typically very calm and orderly, with children working alone or, sometimes, in small groups.
If you want to learn more about Montessori education, check out our comprehensive guide. You can also check out our guide to Montessori preschools, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools.
Highly group-oriented and with a strong emphasis on creative and imaginative play, Waldorf preschool and Kindergarten programs have very little to no emphasis on academics. A Waldorf environment will often feel more like a home than a traditional classroom -- the goal being to instill comfort and and a sense of predictability in students’ day. This emphasis on comfort and predictability also manifests through a heavy use of repetition: for example, teachers might read the same story multiple days in a row. Waldorf schools ask parents to refrain from offering children TV or computers at home, and aim to develop in children a connection to the natural world. If you want to learn more about Waldorf education, check out our comprehensive guide.
We believe that creative thinking finds its expression in imaginative free play and in this way children develop cognitive, social, physical and linguistic skills for life. We strive to present the children with a world of beauty that nurtures their sense of ease, joy, and peace. The children are not introduced to any formal learning at this stage, rather the children engage in artistic activities such as drawing, painting, sewing, and baking. Each day also incorporates outside play time and a healthy snack, as well as a circle time which is rich with seasonal stories and movement games.
Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.
Vancouver Waldorf School fosters a supportive academic culture that emphasizes the process of learning over short-term outcomes. We prioritize nurturing a deep, lifelong love of learning and curiosity in our students. While we maintain high academic standards, our focus is on holistic development, encouraging students to engage fully with the material in a way that resonates with their individual developmental stages. This approach ensures that students are supported in their academic journey, with the freedom to explore subjects deeply and meaningfully, fostering both intellectual and personal growth.
"We intentionally avoid all forms of public distinction between students in terms of academic performance."
Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.
Spiritual
The goal is to cultivate "individuals with inner resourcefulness, strong faith and respect for God or a higher power."
Vancouver Waldorf School’s primary developmental priority is balanced growth, ensuring that students develop intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically in equal measure. We aim to shape well-rounded individuals who are not only academically capable but also emotionally intelligent, socially conscious, and physically active. Our secondary focus is on spiritual development, fostering inner resourcefulness and a deep sense of respect for the world around them. We guide our students to become thoughtful, compassionate, and resilient individuals, equipped with the inner strength and balance needed to navigate life’s challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.

Our children are Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers and Kindergarteners. They are very young! We would love to have students who are interested and eager to explore the world around them and strive to be independent!
At Vancouver Waldorf School, we seek students who are naturally curious, creative, and open-minded. Ideal candidates are those who thrive in a learning environment that emphasizes holistic development—intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. We look for students who demonstrate a willingness to engage deeply with their learning, explore new ideas, and express themselves through both academic and artistic pursuits. To achieve success at our school, students should be resilient, adaptable, and eager to participate in a collaborative community. They should possess a strong sense of empathy and respect for others, as our school values cooperation, mutual support, and social responsibility. A readiness to engage in hands-on, experiential learning and a willingness to explore a wide range of subjects, including the arts, are also important attributes. While academic performance is valued, we place equal importance on a student’s enthusiasm for learning and personal growth. Students who align with our values and who are excited about the opportunity to develop their unique potential within a nurturing and balanced educational environment will thrive at Vancouver Waldorf School.
