    Developmental Priorities

    Balanced
Equal emphasis is placed on a balance of priorities: intellectual, emotional, social and physical cultivation.
    Spiritual
The goal is to cultivate "individuals with inner resourcefulness, strong faith and respect for God or a higher power."
    Intellectual
The goal is to cultivate "academically strong, creative and critical thinkers, capable of exercising rationality, apprehending truth, and making aesthetic distinctions."
    Social
The goal is to cultivate "socially aware and active citizens, motivated to change the world (or their community) for the better."

    Curriculum pace

    Standard-enriched
Broadly-speaking, the main curriculum -- like that of most schools -- paces the provincially-outlined one. This pace is steady and set by the teachers and school. The curriculum might still be enriched in various ways: covering topics more in-depth and with more vigor than the provincial one, or covering a broader selection of topics.

    Academic culture

    Supportive
A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. This does not mean the school lacks standards, or has low expectations for its students: a school can have a supportive academic culture and still light the fire of ambition in its students. It does mean, however, the school provides a less intensive culture than schools with a “rigorous” academic classification, and is focused more simply on instilling a love of learning and life-long curiosity.

    Waldorf
Highly group-oriented and with a strong emphasis on creative and imaginative play, Waldorf preschool and Kindergarten programs have very little to no emphasis on academics. A Waldorf environment will often feel more like a home than a traditional classroom -- the goal being to instill comfort and and a sense of predictability in students’ day. This emphasis on comfort and predictability also manifests through a heavy use of repetition: for example, teachers might read the same story multiple days in a row. Waldorf schools ask parents to refrain from offering children TV or computers at home, and aim to develop in children a connection to the natural world. NORTH STAR ACADEMY

In some senses, North Star is the very definition of a liberal arts education, namely one that intends not to educate students to the vocations, but to educate them to engage creatively, thoughtfully, and respectfully with the world around them. While not tiny, North Star is on the smaller end of the school spectrum, and it benefits from its size through an ability to provide an individualized approach to the delivery of the curriculum. Likewise, the students enter a community that is close-knit and personal, where they are known and celebrated for what they bring to the environment. Development is important, including the adoption of new classroom techniques and tools, and values are as well, including an appreciation of diversity, and allowing both a local and international perspective on the course material. The ideal student is one able to thrive in a challenging, vibrant, and values-based learning environment.

What do you do differently and uniquely well?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Vancouver Waldorf School offers a developmentally appropriate, experiential, and academically rigorous approach to education. To enhance and enrich learning, arts are integrated with all academic disciplines from preschool through twelfth grade. Waldorf education aims to inspire life-long learning in all students and enable them to fully develop their unique capacities. The principles of Waldorf education evolve from an understanding of human development that addresses the needs of the growing child.

The curriculum is not simply made up of subjects to be read about and tested—they are experienced. Through these experiences, Waldorf students cultivate their intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual capacities to be individuals certain of their paths and be of service to the world."

    NORTH STAR ACADEMY

"We believe that students should experience real life learning and we place importance on bridging the gap between theory and practice. NSAL has developed Signature Programs, such as the Signature Community Connections, for experiential learning opportunities where students can develop their skills, increase their tacit knowledge, clarify values and develop their capacity to contribute to their communities. We teach not only for school but for life."

What tradeoffs has your school made to serve families in this way?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"At Vancouver Waldorf School, our strategic tradeoffs reflect a deep commitment to holistic education over conventional metrics of academic success. We prioritize creative and experiential learning, which sometimes means less emphasis on technology integration and standardized testing. This approach fosters deep thinkers and lifelong learners but may differ from more traditional schools focused on frequent technological use and test scores. Our choice to focus on arts, practical skills, and personal development ensures our students are well-rounded, empathetic, and equipped to meet diverse challenges rather than merely excelling in a test-driven environment. These decisions shape a school culture that values individual growth and community connection over competitive achievement."

What key junctures in your school's history have most shaped its present?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Vancouver Waldorf School’s story began in 1967 when three families in West Vancouver shared a vision for Waldorf education. By 1969, a kindergarten was established, and in 1971, the school officially opened with 12 students. A significant expansion occurred in 1981 with the launch of high school programs, allowing students to continue their Waldorf education through adolescence.

In 1976, the school relocated to its current North Vancouver locations, solidifying its presence in the community. The 1990s saw further growth with the construction of new classrooms, and in 2005, a new early childhood center was added to serve the needs of a growing community. The school has since expanded its cultural footprint, with the Festival of the Arts and other seasonal events becoming key traditions.

As we celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2021, these milestones reflect our enduring commitment to providing a holistic education that nurtures the whole child."

What type of student is a good fit for your school?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Vancouver Waldorf School is best suited for students and families who value a holistic education that emphasizes intellectual, emotional, and creative development. Ideal students are those curious about the world, eager to engage in hands-on learning, and open to exploring their artistic and academic abilities in a cooperative environment. Our approach resonates deeply with families who prioritize personal growth, cultural richness, and environmental consciousness over just pure competitive academic achievements. Parents who support a delayed introduction to digital technology and favour a curriculum that integrates arts, music, and movement will find our school aligns well with their educational goals. Families seeking a tight-knit community that nurtures mutual respect, collaboration, and individuality will see their children flourish here."

Under what conditions would you advise a family against choosing your school?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Vancouver Waldorf School may not be the ideal choice for families seeking a traditional education model focused on standardized testing and competitive academic ranking. Our curriculum emphasizes holistic development over test scores, which might not align with the priorities of those who prefer a more conventional academic structure. Additionally, our approach includes a deliberate reduction in early technology use, which may not suit families who value early digital literacy as a core component of schooling. Our community-oriented and collaborative environment may also differ from expectations for families looking for highly structured, discipline-focused educational settings. If a family prioritizes a rigid and technology-intensive curriculum, they may find that our emphasis on arts, creativity, and social development does not meet their specific educational goals."

To your knowledge, why do families choose your school over others?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Families choose Vancouver Waldorf School for its holistic approach that nurtures the whole child—intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. Our balanced curriculum integrates arts, practical skills, and academics, fostering creativity and critical thinking. Parents value our minimal early exposure to technology and a strong emphasis on experiential learning, offering a hands-on educational experience.

The school’s close-knit community and commitment to individualized attention are also key reasons families prefer us. They appreciate the nurturing environment where each child is supported and encouraged to explore their passions. Our philosophy of meeting children at their developmental stage, combined with our focus on community and environmental stewardship, distinguishes us from traditional schools, making us the top choice for those seeking a well-rounded, alternative education."

    NORTH STAR ACADEMY

How would you characterize your school's image amongst the public?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Vancouver Waldorf School is widely recognized for its commitment to a holistic educational philosophy that integrates intellectual, emotional, and creative development. In the public eye, our school is most prominently seen as a nurturing environment that emphasizes the growth of the whole child — head, heart, and hands — rather than focusing solely on academic achievements. This reputation is underpinned by our distinctive approach that incorporates arts, crafts, music, and movement into everyday learning, supporting students to develop a balanced set of skills and values. Our emphasis on minimal use of technology in early education and the development of critical thinking and social skills through collaborative and experiential learning are attributes that resonate in our community. This image aligns closely with our identity as a school that prepares well-rounded individuals who are ready to contribute thoughtfully and creatively to society."

What aspect of your school is underappreciated?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"An often underappreciated aspect of Vancouver Waldorf School is our commitment to fostering strong interpersonal relationships and community engagement. While our holistic educational approach is well-known, the depth of our community involvement—from local environmental projects to cultural festivals—may not be fully recognized for its impact. This engagement not only enriches the student experience but also cultivates a sense of social responsibility and connectedness that extends beyond the classroom. Families may see these activities but might not fully appreciate how they enhance learning outcomes and develop well-rounded, empathetic individuals who are prepared to actively participate in and contribute to their communities."

What might families find surprising about your school?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"One aspect of Vancouver Waldorf School that might surprise families is the intensity and depth of our academic rigor, which is often masked by our strong emphasis on arts and holistic development. While many initially perceive our school as primarily arts-focused, they soon discover that our curriculum robustly integrates traditional academic subjects with artistic and practical skills in a way that deeply enhances understanding and retention. This balanced approach not only fosters creativity but also cultivates a high level of intellectual engagement and critical thinking. Families are often pleasantly surprised to find that their children develop a strong foundation in sciences, mathematics, and humanities, complemented by their artistic and practical achievements, leading to a well-rounded and comprehensive education that prepares students exceptionally well for higher education and beyond."

    NORTH STAR ACADEMY

"Families are enthralled by the various opportunities presented by the Academy. Whether it be an academic contest, educational outing, guest speaker or volunteer initiative, NSAL is always encouraging students to try something new; "the more you do, the more you become!". Parents also value NSAL's Grade 12 Pre-University program that can be completed in 1 year as they apply to some of the bets Universities in Montreal or anywhere in the world!"

How will your school change in the next 5 years?

    VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

"Recently, in collaboration with the BC Collective of Waldorf Schools, we have implemented a revised literacy assessment program to better gather data and improve instruction, ensuring we meet the diverse needs of our students. Additionally, we have introduced ‘calm-and-reset’ spaces within each classroom, along with a central student reset space, to support students who may become disregulated during the school day.

Over the next five years and beyond, Vancouver Waldorf School plans to enhance its high school program and undertake significant infrastructure improvements across all our facilities. These enhancements, combined with the future focus on expanding our campuses, will ensure that our students continue to receive a rich, well-rounded education in a refreshed and supportive environment."

      Our Take: primary curriculum type

      VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

Waldorf schools are available from preschool to Grade 12, though they are most popular at the younger ages. Waldorf schools are unmistakably "progressive". Rudolf Steiner, their intellectual forefather, believed the educator's first task should be to help students develop an aesthetic appreciation for life and learning. Sometimes incorrectly conflated with Montessori schools, Waldorf schools focus on developing the "whole child" - emphasizing collaborative, hands-on learning, along with the arts and music, which are integrated into other areas of study.

      NORTH STAR ACADEMY

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Students usually learn by observing and listening to their teacher, studying facts and concepts in textbooks, and completing both tests and written assignments - which challenge students to not only demonstrate their mastery of content but their ability to analyze and deconstruct it critically. Class discussions are also used to create critical dialogue around the content of the curriculum.

Our teachers introduce skills, subjects, and concepts in alignment with the child’s physiological, emotional, and spiritual development, ensuring that learning is meaningful and relevant. A multi-sensory approach integrates the arts into every subject, engaging students fully in the learning process rather than focusing solely on intellectual information. In the high school, the curriculum emphasizes the development of creative and independent thinking, with all subjects drawing on students’ capacities for analytical thought and judgment. Our rich curriculum encompasses academic, artistic, and movement-based courses, preparing students to think critically and act creatively in all aspects of their lives.

These math programs feature an equal balance of “Traditional” and “Discovery” methods.

        NORTH STAR ACADEMY

Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.

What the school says about their math program

        VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

At Vancouver Waldorf School, mathematics is taught through a blend of creative thinking and practical application. Early education focuses on developing a strong foundation in basic arithmetic through rhythmical activities and hands-on experiences, such as counting games and movement-based learning. As students progress, they engage with more abstract concepts through real-world applications, such as geometry through art or algebra in relation to music. This approach ensures that students not only understand mathematical concepts but also see their relevance and beauty in the world around them.

Early reading at Vancouver Waldorf School is introduced gradually, respecting each child’s developmental readiness. Stories, songs, and oral storytelling play a significant role in building language skills before formal reading instruction begins. The introduction of letters is often linked to images, stories, and movement, helping children connect with the symbolic meaning of written language. This method fosters a deep love for reading and a solid foundation in literacy.

What the school says about their writing program

        VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

Writing is integrated with the development of fine motor skills and artistic expression. Students begin by learning to form letters through drawing and painting, which naturally leads to the development of handwriting. Writing is also connected to storytelling, allowing students to express themselves creatively while mastering the technical aspects of writing. This approach emphasizes the beauty of written language and its role as a powerful tool for communication.

        Our take: science approach type

        VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

Inquiry-based science emphasizes teaching science as a way of thinking or practice, and therefore tries to get students “doing” science as much as possible -- and not just “learning” it. Students still learn foundational scientific ideas and content (and build on this knowledge progressively); however, relative to expository science instruction, inquiry-based programs have students spend more time developing and executing their own experiments (empirical and theoretical). Students are frequently challenged to develop critical and scientific-thinking skills by developing their own well-reasoned hypothesis and finding ways to test those hypotheses. Projects and experiments are emphasized over textbook learning. Skills are emphasized over breadth of knowledge.

        NORTH STAR ACADEMY

Expository science is the more traditional method of teaching science: students learn scientific facts, theories, and the relationships between them through direct instruction by the teacher. These programs still incorporate hands-on experimentation and “live science”; however, relative to inquiry-based programs, expository science tilts towards content mastery and knowledge acquisition. Direct instruction ensures this acquisition process is efficient. Textbooks are emphasized (starting in earlier grades than inquiry-based programs), as are knowledge tests: students are asked to demonstrate they have thoroughly learned the content of the course, and can apply that knowledge to novel and challenging problems or questions.

Science education at Vancouver Waldorf School is rooted in observation and experiential learning. In the early grades, students explore the natural world through hands-on activities, nature walks, and gardening. As they advance, the curriculum introduces more structured scientific inquiry, encouraging students to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions. The approach is interdisciplinary, often linking science with arts and humanities, fostering a holistic understanding of the world.

        NORTH STAR ACADEMY

In traditional literature programs students focus on decoding the mechanics of texts: plot, characterization, and themes. These texts tend to include a balance of contemporary and “classic” literature. When studying a past work, students investigate its historical context -- but only insofar as this adds understanding to the work itself. Past works are therefore studied “on their own terms”, and not merely as historical artifacts to be deconstructed: traditional literature programs are firmly rooted in the humanities, and carry the belief that great literature can reveal fundamental and universal truths about the human condition. These programs emphasize class discussions and critical essay writing, and aim to develop in students critical thinking, communication skills, and a cultivated taste and ethos.

Computers are used in the classroom from time to time, but integrating technology into everything students do is not a dominant focus. Digital literacy is understood to be a legitimate skill in the 21st century, but not one that should distract from teaching the subject at hand, or more fundamental skills and literacies. The idea is today’s students, being “digital natives”, are likely exposed to computers and new media enough outside the classroom: the role of the school, rather, should be to develop competencies that may otherwise get missed.

Technology (e.g. desktop and laptops) is only used as a learning tool more prominently in high school. This ensures that students develop essential digital literacy skills while maintaining a balanced and healthy approach to technology use.

VANCOUVER WALDORF SCHOOL

At Vancouver Waldorf School, we seek students who are naturally curious, creative, and open-minded. Ideal candidates are those who thrive in a learning environment that emphasizes holistic development—intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. We look for students who demonstrate a willingness to engage deeply with their learning, explore new ideas, and express themselves through both academic and artistic pursuits. To achieve success at our school, students should be resilient, adaptable, and eager to participate in a collaborative community. They should possess a strong sense of empathy and respect for others, as our school values cooperation, mutual support, and social responsibility. A readiness to engage in hands-on, experiential learning and a willingness to explore a wide range of subjects, including the arts, are also important attributes. While academic performance is valued, we place equal importance on a student’s enthusiasm for learning and personal growth. Students who align with our values and who are excited about the opportunity to develop their unique potential within a nurturing and balanced educational environment will thrive at Vancouver Waldorf School.
