The environment—both physically and pedagogically—was designed to address the needs of students with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, dyslexia, and autism Spectrum Disorder. In some senses, that describes quite a range of students and abilities, including those who may function both above and below their peers. While the classroom setting and extra-curricular activities provide opportunities for social development, the pace of instruction is individualized. The intention is to prepare students for high school, developing a personalized suite of strategies and skills necessary for them to make the most of academic life once they leave Wildwood after grade 8.

With only 60 students, and class sizes between 4-14 (ratio maximum 10:1), students get to know the whole school and make close social connections. I joined the Wildwood team in the fall of 2021. Before coming to Wildwood, I worked as a teacher for 12 years and then became a Vice Principal with the Halton District School Board. After 3 years as a VP, I became a Principal, a role I enjoyed for 17 years. Throughout my 32 years in public education, I had the pleasure of working in 3 different school boards. I opened a new elementary school in Milton and also worked as a System Principal. Each role and opportunity allowed me to learn and grow so I could better serve the needs of my school community. After retiring from public education, I worked for a teacher recruitment company in London, England. This was a very different experience and I felt privileged to visit teacher’s colleges across Canada and help new teachers find teaching jobs in the U.K. In 2021, at a time when we were finally enjoying relaxed restrictions with COVID, I was given an opportunity that turned out to be the highlight of my professional career. I received an email from a colleague who shared that Wildwood Academy was looking for a Principal. Feeling unsure if this was the right move for me, I came for a visit to learn more about the school and its philosophy. After 10 minutes, I was sold. This school’s “raison d’etre” re-ignited my passion for working with children, especially those who struggled to succeed or feel safe at school. This was my chance to serve the needs of students who are often underserved in mainstream schools. Seeing these children come to school with a smile and leave each day feeling successful was enough to put my retirement plans on pause. This school does what all schools should do: make students feel that, regardless of their past experiences and challenges, they are valued and respected and, like everyone else, they can be successful. My only regret is I didn’t start this role earlier. I am proud to be part of the Wildwood community.

Progressive (sometimes called "in- quiry-based") curricula attempt to place children's interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, progressive curricula are often "emergent", with learning activities shaped by students' questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions.
Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Traditional Math typically teaches a method or algorithm FIRST, and THEN teaches the applications for the method. Traditional algorithms are emphasized and practiced regularly: repetition and drills are frequently used to ensure foundational mastery in the underlying mathematical procedures. The traditional approach to math views math education as akin to building a logical edifice: each brick depends on the support of the previously laid ones, which represent mastery over a particular procedure or method. Traditional Math begins by giving students a tool, and then challenges students to practice using that tool an applied way, with progressively challenging problems. In this sense Traditional Math aims to establish procedural understanding before conceptual and applied understanding.
At SJA, we believe that the best learning in mathematics comes from creative exploration. However, we still see the value in some traditional approaches in math. We ensure that the most useful traditional methods are carried forward into our discovery model. With this blended model, we have seen the greatest increase in mathematical ability and retention. For our Lower School math curriculum, we use Math Makes Sense workbooks and textbooks. We effectively combine an inquiry approach with a practical approach. Our students memorize addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts as required by their grade-level specific math curriculum.

A school with a “supportive” academic culture focuses more on process than short-term outcomes: academic performance is a welcomed side-benefit, but not the driving focus. Wildwood is specifically designed to support students with learning disabilities. With small class sizes, grouping based on ability, additional support, repetition, review, and specialized strategies, we help students with learning difficulties.

Welcome! We are delighted that you are considering St. Jude’s Academy. This application package is an integral part of our admissions process. Please be assured that none of the questions are intended to prevent students from being invited to attend our school. We are trying to gain as much information about students and their families as possible so that all parties involved have a solid foundation for a rich and engaging personal interview. We admit students for the following September on a continuous basis throughout the year. Admission to St. Jude’s Academy is competitive; thus, to avoid disappointment, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
Students must be able to attend to a lead teacher in a classroom, independently manage their belongings, understand and attend to their bodily signals (example: hunger, thirst, temperature, toileting, etc.), and show that they have self-regulation skills to not disrupt the classroom environment. If a student does need more support in one of these areas, we can offer our Educational Assistant Program, where an Educational Assistant is paired specifically with the child and helps them meet their needs throughout their day. Wildwood also has a 1:1 program, where one teacher is paired with the student and can support them academically to build the skills the student needs to be in larger Wildwood classes. The increase in support does come with an increase in tuition costs.
STEP 1: THE TOUR
We begin with a personalized information session, offering an in-depth understanding of our IB Programme and Student Life. Subsequent to this session, we extend an invitation for you to embark on a personalized tour of our St. Jude’s Academy campus – you will be able to experience our classrooms in session, engage with our dedicated teachers, and ask questions.

STEP 2: THE ASSESSMENT
For students in Grades 1 to 8, applicants complete one day of assessments in reading, writing and math, to give us a better understanding of their strengths and opportunities.
We also ask for the following:
1. For Upper School students (Grades 9 to 12): English, Science or Social Studies teacher reference

Please scan (or take clear pictures with your phone) the two most recent Report Cards for your child.
During the summer, as schools are closed, Teacher References are not required for new registrations for the September 2024 start date. We will be reviewing report cards to assess suitability for our academic program
Upper School (Grades 9 to 12) students’ Teacher Reference forms must be submitted from the teachers to the Admissions Office email ([email protected]) directly. Please submit supporting documents by emailing them to our Admissions Team at [email protected].
STEP 3: THE DECISION
Admission decisions are made based on a careful review of the applicant’s report cards, academic potential, extracurricular accomplishments, character and overall suitability for the IB St. Jude’s Academy experience.
Please let us know if your child has any academic, social or behavioural concerns. Learning support is available. Our Guidance Counsellor continues to assess student cases as needed.
STEP 4: THE FINAL STEP - REGISTRATION FORMS
Once your Report Cards are assessed, and we believe that your child would be a good fit for St. Jude’s Academy, we will invite you to complete and submit our Registration Package electronically. This package is available on our website by grade on our Tuition and Fees page, linked below, and or will be sent to you on completion of the Information Session.

Tuition and FeesAt Wildwood, we have a three step admissions process.
Step 1: A discovery phone call with the principal. Parents have a chance to ask questions and discuss if Wildwood Academy is a good environment for their child.
Step 2: A private school tour. The principal or director will tour parents around the school and talk about how specific aspects of the day could help the child applying. Parents get to see classes, meet students, and see a snapshot of life at Wildwood Academy.
Step 3: A visit/trial day. The child applying to be a Wildwood student will come into the school for a half day or full day. They will be paired with a buddy for the day who is at a similar level and follow their schedule. This day allows our team at Wildwood to ensure that this is the best fit for the student. If there is evidence that Wildwood is a good fit, our team will complete some assessments with the child to determine grade levels in various subject areas. This gives us their placement to create their personal schedule.
