“We don’t jump on their weak areas,” says Angela Burgos, head of school. “If your child struggles with math, we’re not going to pounce on math right away — a sure recipe for failure and discouragement. Instead, we work on developing strengths to get some traction and then tackle those harder areas.” That approach accounts for much of the value that Centennial can offer, and the success that it has. The typical student arrives after struggling within a traditional academic setting. Most often, that struggle is a result of linguistic disruption—dyslexia, dysgraphia—or executive functioning issues, as common in children with ADHD or autism spectrum disorders. For them, the approach taken at the school can feel like a breath of fresh air. Instruction is empathetic, using strategies appropriate to the students' unique needs. An environment in which students find themselves as part of a majority, rather than an academic or social minority, can also create unique opportunities for the development of a positive self-concept than might previously been available to them. “School results increase because their confidence increases," says Burgos. Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Centennial Academy is also unique within Montreal in that it offers a full curriculum in both English and French.

The teaching environment is bright, clean, and inviting, with lots of colour and natural light. It’s just a very comfortable place for young people to spend their days. Instruction is student-centred, building on the skills, interests, and needs that the students bring with them into the room. The intention is to deliver the attributes and knowledge they will need in the future as they move on to secondary and post-secondary education, and life. Administration references future-focused skills, though it says something about the school that creativity, empathy and kindness make that list. The school leadership is accessible, and assessment and progress reporting is consistent and detailed. So, yes, the school looks charming, and indeed it is, in all kinds of ways. Founded in 2017, Claren Academy has quickly become an important and valued educational offering within the city.

Traditional curricula tend to be very content-based and rooted in the core disciplines. It is a structured approach that involves the teacher delivering a unified curriculum through direct instruction. Play-based programs are the most common type of preschool and Kindergarten, and are founded on the belief young children learn best through play. Largely open-ended and minimally structured, play-based programs aim to develop social skills and a love of attending school. “Pre-academic” skills are taught, but in a more indirect way than at, say, an Academic program: through children playing in different “stations” set up around the classroom, which children choose on their own volition. We are firm believers in the Universal Design for Learning, a completely inclusive approach that meets the learning needs of the greatest number, and diversity, of students. UDL ensures that all types of learners can learn, by providing multiple means of representation, expression and engagement. At Centennial, all students follow the rigorous Quebec curriculum, without differentiation, reducing requirements or competencies. Our curriculum is planned and delivered in an engaging and predictable manner by our highly-qualified teachers, making it accessible to all learners. Our multidisciplinary team of specialists works with students outside the classroom to help them develop and acquire the learning and social skills they need to become life-long learners.

Centennial welcomes students with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, anxiety and autism spectrum disorders. No student should be expected to fit into a mold. We aim to be academically and socially inclusive and strive to make learning both accessible and meaningful. Based on data and needs, students might be offered additional support through our after-school program. Support includes help with homework, planning and organization, either in groups or individually.
We are able to provide minor accommodations for our students experiencing subclinical difficulties. At this time, we do not have the resources to assist any clinically diagnosed learning disability.

If your child is not happy going to school, lacks motivation, cannot concentrate, spends hours on homework, struggles with reading/writing, if his/her marks don't reflect his/her efforts or if he/she has a diagnosis of Autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, ASD, Anxiety, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and/or Dyspraxia, you should consider Centennial.
Admission to grades K-8 at Claren Academy is based on: - The candidate's social, emotional, and developmental readiness - The family's interview - The candidate's actions during the play-based observation - The school's assessment of references and past academic records The following may also be considered: - Availability of space in the year to which the candidate is applying - Diversity and gender balance - Siblings of students already enrolled

Claren Academy is accepting applications for kindergarten to grade 8, adding a grade each year up to grade 12. Children born from 2010 to 2018 are eligible to apply for 2023.
Application steps:
Interviews and play evaluations take place on a rolling basis. Placement decisions will be announced within two weeks of your interview and observation. Successful applicants will then be asked for a deposit to secure enrolment.
