The broader school community is notable for involvement by a passionate core of parents and other supporters. This is welcomed, and encouraged by the school, at almost every opportunity. We believe that the school should focus more effort on encouraging greater participation by the wider community, so that more families become faces around the school. There are ample opportunities to volunteer and support the school. We would like to see more folks making the school central to their family lives.
There are lots of opportunities for parents to get involved at SMS. There is a Parent Auxililary that supports the school through hosting dances, book fairs, craft fairs, and pizza lunches. These activites give parents an opportunity to work together with the school to build community as well as to give back to the school. For example, the Parents Auxiliary hosts a book fair each Fall and Spring, the proceeds of which goes towards buying books for the library in order to keep the books in the library relevant and up-to-date. Other ways parents can get involved in participating on various field trips, or helping out in the classroom during class time with writing workshops, or in other ways as needed by the teachers. There are also committees, such as the Steering Committee, that works to find ways to implement the strategies as outlined in the school's 10-year Strategic Plan. This committee is made up of students, parents, teachers and the Head of School and the Chair of the Board of Govenors. This committee provides everyone involved, especially the students, an opportunity to have a voice in how the school moves forward and to make its strategic plan come to life.
I have attended St. Margaret’s since my Junior Kindergarten year and as I now near the end of high school, SMS has been a part of who I have grown to become. St. Margaret’s is more of a home than a school, each student and staff member is an indispensable part of this inclusive and welcoming family. Being an international school, SMS has students attending from all of the world! Whether you are living on campus or a day student, SMS has a diverse range of cultures which contributes to the all-inclusive SMS community.
I cherish the parent community at Saint Margaret’s. It definitely feels like an extended family and given the size of the school it is possible to maintain a closeness I have not seen elsewhere.
There was a welcoming atmosphere at SMS. Efforts are made to include and welcome parents (both day and boarding families) without undue pressure to participate.
