OCS is a strong proponent of building good character in all students and in our experience, all staff support this and lead by example. They truly have a passion for education in a Christ-like environment. We have not had any serious problems but certainly any issues we've had have been dealt with promptly and discreetly. They encourage parents to be involved and take action. Fortunately, my children have not had discipline issues so I cannot comment further on that. OCS has both a school newsletter that is emailed weekly to all parents along with a classroom-specific Week-At-At-Glance from teachers. Any upcoming events are communicated mainly with these two tools and we find it very effective to keep us in the loop. The teachers also encourage parents to email teachers directly and I have found this very useful. They respond within 24 hours. I am involved with the PTA so I am often at the school and will use that time to ask questions directly to the teachers.
What stands out to me the most about the leadership at Oakville Christian School is the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that permeates the entire school. The administration works very hard to get to know each and every child and family. They know the children by name and learn who they are. The relationships that are fostered between the school administration and the students makes the school community feel like family. The communication between the school and families is very good. Each week every family in the school receives a newsletter outlining up coming events and day to day life with in the school. This newsletter includes pictures and highlights various aspects of school life. It also incudes volunteer opportunities for parents and caregivers to become more involved with school life. In addition to the school wide newsletter, each teacher sends out a week at a glance newsletter for their class which includes information about what the class will be doing in the coming week as well as upcoming tests and assignments. This communication allows parents an ongoing inside look at what is going on at the school and inside the classroom. The administration is very responsive and can be reached easily by phone or email. They respond to issues quickly and effectively. Teachers and administrators handle discipline issues fairly with respect, care and compassion. They always want what is best for the students working closely with families to develop strategies that will foster positive outcomes.
Communication is one of the top reasons that we love OCS. The leadership, teachers and entire administration are all so responsive to any questions, concerns or needs. They are all very friendly and helpful, which is something that is important to me as a parent. Teachers always make themselves available if you have concerns or just want an update on your child's progress.
From your first visit to Oakville Christian School the leadership and administration do everything they can to make you and your family feel welcome and valued. They go out of their way to help you settle into school life and life in Oakville if it is new to you, as it was to us when we first moved to Canada. I am amazed at how quickly the administration learn about your family and remember the children's names. This in itself helps children and their parents transition to a new school, where you immediately feel like you have joined a big family. The administration and principle are always available by phone, email and in person and respond quickly to all queries. All matters whether of a serious or trivial nature are dealt with efficiently and with respect to all involved. Discipline issues are dealt with sensitively making sure all parties are kept informed and that children are aware of the consequences of their actions. The communication between the administration and parents is very good. There is a a weekly newsletter that contains details of the previous week in school and what to expect in the week ahead. Polite reminders for volunteer opportunities, topics of chapels and charity events are posted allowing all families to see what is going on in daily school life. Homeroom teachers also send out a weekly update with more pertinent details to their specific class.
I find the school leadership team to be dedicated and principled. Our kids are truly cared for by a team that puts their safety and learning first. The board, principal, VP, etc. are parents themselves and easy to talk to. I feel that we have a good working relationship with them - they are professional and personable, and we are heard and given the opportunity to be involved. At times, we have had to work through discipline issues and I feel our children are respected and the process is restorative. If there are broader concerns, leadership takes it seriously, working towards solutions in the interest of the students. I feel that the leadership are open and authentic and quite good at communicating. We especially feel that the leadership sets a high standard for creating a quality schooling experience for each individual child.
The reason we joined the OCS community is a direct reflection of the school leadership and administration team. We met the leadership and administration staff at an open house, and this experience was so engaging and welcoming that it was a simple decision for us to choose OCS for our children. The school administration team makes an effort to know all of the children and engage in conversation with them, when possible. The environment is a safe and positive one which nurtures children to strive to do their best. In our experience, discipline issues are handled discretely and addressed promptly. The result may not always be as we would like, but we clearly understand all choices and decisions and in the end, believe issues are addressed in a fair manner.
