What learning looks like now: New Haven Learning Centre has pivoted to respond proactively and responsibly to COVID-19 with multiple steps taken to protect the health and safety of our learning community. Health and Safety policies have led all steps taken to adjust; including investment in resources, signage, and training for all. PPE, including face shields and/or masks, are mandatory for all staff and students are encouraged to learn mask toleration, but are not required to wear masks full-time as they are supported on a 1:1 capacity by staff who focus on enhanced personal hygiene with their students. Preventative measures such as physically distancing with no more than 5 students per room, frequent hand washing, and increased cleaning and sanitizing, in addition to reducing carryover resource use and increased care in individually supporting our clients, have led each step. Additionally, some areas have been restricted access to reduce risks and visitors are welcomed remotely at this time to allow for reduced foot traffic. Prior to daily entry, all staff and all clients complete a pre-entry health screening and temperature check and sick leave are encouraged and monitored for any potential COVID-19 symptomology in students or staff. As circumstances warrant, New Haven will continue to respond to government directives and health measures recommended while also taking extra steps to support a healthy learning environment.

New Haven Learning Centre may be different than the vast bulk of private schools, though in the most important ways, it isn’t. The goal is to work with children, supporting them to learn, and grow, within a purposeful community. Instruction is evidence-based, drawing from a range of best practices and expertise, and conducted in close collaboration with family and support workers. Likewise, there is a desire to keep the student experience close as possible to what you’d find in any school across the country. With a high student-teacher ratio, parents appreciate that their children are known throughout the school, and feel a part of the school community, as well as the fact that the challenges they face are understood. Attention is kind, empathetic, and the results are profound.
