Fostering a sense of community is a primary focus at Havergal. This is achieved by consistently engaging both students and parents in all aspects of school life. Parents are invited to attend the school for various functions and are invited to volunteer for special events like Celebration Saturday or the Father Daughter dance. They are also encouraged to participate in various social events designed to introduce parents to each other and to help build the feeling of being part of the school community. We have found the parent community to be quite engaging. Dinners, outings and get togethers with parents of other girls in our daughter's grade happen throughout the year, and we have developed friendships with a number of Havergal parents by virtue of the activities our daughter has participated in and the friends she has made at school. The school exudes spirit, pride and camaraderie, and that is quite evident from the communications we receive from the school and the regular reports we hear from our daughter of her experiences there. The school's focus on spirit and community have helped our daughter feel welcome there since day one, and have proven to be a major component in her enjoyment of her time at the school.
We have a very inclusive Parent Association that is always working to enhance the parent community. The HCPA hosts parent socials, coffee mornings, various mother daughter and father daughter events for all different grades, and manages an online marketplace that sells Havergal spirit wear, school frames and a variety of other things. In addition, there is a Grade rep program that allows parents from each grade to attend monthly meetings with the school's senior leadership team thereby giving parents an opportunity for further insight into the daily happenings at the school. Many parents feel very involved and the PA is always looking for ways to improve parent engagement. With hundreds of volunteers the parents association's mandate is to maximize parent engagement and to raise some money to further enhance those opportunities.
Havergal College has a very warm, welcoming community. Parents are very much encouraged to become involved in the school and there are many opportunities to volunteer - be it helping out at an activity or event, or more formally on the HCPA (Havergal College Parents Association). The HCPA organizes many events and initiatives each year at Havergal to engage families, and fosters a strong sense of community and school spirit. There are many volunteer roles and ways to become involved at Havergal and new parents are most definitely welcome and very much encouraged to become involved right from the beginning. There is something for every parent at Havergal, if they were wanting to become involved, and there is flexibility to allow parents working to be involved as well.
The Havergal Parent's association's mandate is all about increasing parent engagement and fostering community spirit. Each and every parent is a member of the parent's association and welcome to participate in all the events. There several events each month and over hundreds of volunteer opportunities. Each year, there are more and more opportunities to volunteer. The parent association is equally split between the Junior and Upper school and has several men and women both stay at home and full-time working parents on the committee as well as several parents where English in not their first language. I have not only made several friends from volunteering but I feel my daughter appreciates me being at her school and taking an interest in her activities there. I appreciate Havergal giving me several opportunities to be part of their community.
One of the most important mandates of the school is parent engagement. There are so many opportunities for parents to get involved with the school, primarily through volunteering, parent socials, family events, fundraisers, concerts, moms’ night out events, mother-daughter events and father-daughter events, Each grade is represented by grade representatives that help promote parent engagement. Coffee mornings and grade specific social events are organized and offered multiple times a year. Chinese ambassadors have been selected to connect our growing Chinese community and to help them assimilate if they are new to the country. The welcome committee helps new families to transition to Havergal. Families are paired with new families to help answer questions before the start of school and repeatedly throughout the school year to offer guidance. Havergal also helps connects alumni (old girls) with each other and celebrates their time at the school with different events for example, grandchildren’s party. Overall, the school community is strong and connected and new families are welcomed with open arms.
