Campers looking for a fun way to spend their summer days will love our camp with its combination of traditional camp activities, STEAM projects and outdoor education. Pickering College has a long history of offering exceptional experiential education to students, and we are proud to incorporate these principles which build resilience and leadership in our camp program. Our camp is located on our main campus, a beautiful 42-acre space with ample outdoor recreation space including several wooded areas, four large fields, a baseball diamond, a rubberized surface track and several outdoor classrooms. Each week campers will visit our nearby Blue & Silver Farm for a full-day camp activity and cook-out day. Come join us for fresh air, healthy activity and to meet new friends.

Week 1: June 21-June 25, 2021

Interacting with our Ecosystem

Campers will participate in daily full-campus active games to experience the roles of different plants and animals in the ecosystem.  Further highlights include creating their own ecosystem diorama, building a bee or bird habitat, sketching and identifying wildlife, plants and birds, and planting their own mini-garden.  On the final day, students will venture to the Blue and Silver Farm where they will experience the life of a local animal, evaluating where the animal would like to live, where they would find food and water, building a den with their group and enjoying their meal in the woods.

Week 2: June 28-July 2, 2021

Earth, Wind, Fire, Water

This week of camp focuses on exploring the elements of earth, fire, wind and water.  Active games allow students to experience the super power of each element and discover how the elements impact our daily lives.  Crafts such as clay pottery, wind chimes, wood burning and water painting deepen understanding of the properties of the elements.  The final day cookout at the Blue and Silver Farm will celebrate the four elements with kite races, water play, earth ovens and bonfires.

Week 3: July 5-9, 2021

Survival Challenge!

Campers in Week 3 will explore how people can use found materials to survive the elements.  They will build shelters and other camp furnishings with branches and twine.  They will create crafts like water bottle holders and satchels using found materials, and prepare foods like butter and jam using only outdoors items.   They will play interactive, full campus games to learn signaling and basic wilderness first aid.  Our final day will be a team challenge where groups use their survival skills to face various exciting challenges around the Blue and Silver Farm, culminating in a tin-can cook out!

Week 4: July 12-16, 2021

Treasure Hunting, Archeology and Orienteering

Week 4 campers are in for an exciting week of map reading, campus quests and buried treasure.  Campers will learn about archeology and digs, and participate in a dig that reveals clues about people and land at Pickering College many years ago.  Campers will personalize their own dig kit, create history in a bottle and make geocaches and time capsules.  Our final day will be an orienteering lesson and challenge around the Blue and Silver Farm where campers will read their maps to find stations, clues and cookout supplies, ending up at a treasure island themed lunch.

Week 5: August 23-27, 2021

Traditions and our land

All around the world First Peoples have used the land around them for sustenance, but also for arts, games and cultural traditions.  This week will explore some of the fascinating traditional games found around the world.  Campers will also look at the arts, and how early people used materials from the earth to make cave paintings, mosaics, jewelry, musical instruments and tools.  Students will taste delicious traditional foods from around the world at the final day cookout at the Blue and Silver Farm.

Week 6: August 30-September 3, 2021

Machines and Mechanics

Campers in our final week will love exploring how forces and energy work together to create fun machines.  While learning about early machines, they will develop a defense system of their own castle using catapults and pulleys.  They will use basic mechanics to build a vehicle as a team and modify features before a race around the PC track.  Finally, on the last day of camp, they will complete an amazing race around the Blue and Silver Farm which will have them create simple machines to access materials for their cookout lunch.
