Safer Cycling Calgary reacts to new Alberta restrictions
Melissa Malejko, the owner of Safer Cycling Calgary, was saddened to announce that with the new Alberta restrictions, all First Time, Beginner and Novice courses have been cancelled, as these courses are not transportation-focused. Intermediate and Advanced courses will run as scheduled. Restrictions are expected to be re-analyzed after the May long weekend and more information will be forthcoming then. Intermediate kids summer school courses are expected to proceed as planned, says Malejko, as these courses teach kids how to use their bike for transportation and are thus essential.
The covid pandemic has highlighted a greater need for bicycle education, as Calgarians (and people around the world) take to bikes for recreation as well as a safe form of transportation. However, it is imperative that one hazard is not traded for another: knowing how to balance and pedal a bike is far from the end of cycling education and dangers exist while biking. Learning how to use a bike as a vehicle is important but must be done safely as well. More information on what Safer Cycling Calgary is doing to keep you, or your children, safe while learning how to ride a bike for transportation is available on the website: http://www.safercyclingcalgary.ca
