About this course
In this course, students will immerse themselves in the world of Harry Potter, learn about the incredible characterization that was achieved in the series, and finally retell a section of the story from a different character’s perspective! We will have many fun, Harry Potter-themed activities along the way that will involve writing, design, and research.
What you'll learn
Throughout this course, students will focus on an array of reading skills including, but not limited to, literary techniques/devices (imagery, foreshadowing, symbolism, and so on), the narrative voice (storytelling from various perspectives), characterization (analyzing and building characters), and punctuation/grammar (proper English formatting). Built into each lesson is, of course, Harry Potter FUN: trivia games, creative activities, and more!
Each lesson, students will perform a 5-minute “Quickwrite” which are written responses to thought-provoking questions designed to have students put themselves in the shoes of the characters. Students will be asked reading comprehension questions and will participate in a discussion of the main topic. In-class activities will alternate between creative/design activities and written responses. Moreover, students will work on developing and enhancing their vocabulary.
Materials & Homework
Students should come to class prepared with 3 things:
- a copy of each book (PDFs will be provided, but a hard copy makes things easier)
- a computer or tablet with a keyboard.
