The Our Kids review of Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club Jr. Sailing School

    our take

Anyone can sail—once they’ve taken a program at Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club. Spend the summer on the water learning to sail and/or race. At the end of the summer, there are opportunities to participate in a Regatta! Parents are encouraged to get involved and learn their way around the dinghy or keelboat with their own lessons, but they forewarn: kids will want to race their parents. Safety is the most important focus of all of the programs at Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club Jr. Sailing School. The girl’s only sailing camp focuses on building confidence and inspiring female sailors. Led by high-achieving female coaches, they want to share their love of sailing and give girls a chance to connect with other girls in the sailing community. Fun is first, earning CANSail accreditation is a close second. The club has a long and storied history in Toronto, with the Jr. Sailing School starting in 1961. When you sign up for the Jr. Sailing School, you join a community of people who love to sail and who are happy to foster that love in new sailors.

    Director's Message

Chris Ruch, ABYC Sailing School Director

Thank you for considering ABYC sailing camp for your child this summer!

Whether you are a beginner, (no experience necessary) or a seasoned racer looking to advance your skills, there is something for everyone at our Junior Sailing School. Campers range in age from 6-18 years old, and there are a variety of options to chose from, with camps offered in 2 to 8 week blocks.

Camp options include: WetFeet, for our yougest and least experienced campers. This is a great first step for a child to 'dip their toe' into the world of sailing. With a focus on fun, it can often ignite a life long love of sailing. Another option for your camper are the CANSail leveled courses - an internationally recognized sailing qualification. If competition is more of what your child is looking for, we also offer Opti, Laser, and double handed race teams. These include opportunities to compete in various regattas around the lake, as well as further afield. We are very proud that ABYC Junior sailors have represented Canada at various International events.

Safety is of paramount inportance and all courses are taught by certified sailing instructors. On shore lessons are provided in small groups before the campers head out onto the lake to put their skills to the test. There are themed days to round off each camp with dressing up, bbq, and silly games- always a firm favourite with the campers!

For further information, please do not hesitate to contact Roxanne in our office. Alternatively, you can reach me directly at [email protected] and I would be delighted to answer your questions.

I look forward to welcoming your daughter/son to ABYC this summer!

    Fair Winds,

    Chris Ruch

    ABYC Sailing School Director
