OUR KIDS editor speaks about Metropolitan Preparatory Academy
Introduction
There are few schools in Toronto’s private school landscape quite like Metropolitan Preparatory Academy (Metro Prep). Since its founding in 1982, Metro Prep has consistently provided a forward-thinking and dynamic educational environment that prepares students not only for post-secondary education but also for life in a fast-changing world. Unlike some traditional private schools that emphasize hierarchy and convention, Metro Prep emphasizes creativity, individuality, leadership, and innovation, all while maintaining rigorous academic standards.
The school’s leadership, including Principal Ryan Seeley and Vice Principal Joanna Johnson, is deeply committed to creating a school community where every student is personally known and guided to reach their full potential. “We believe that education is about unlocking each student’s strengths, not forcing them into a one-size-fits-all mould,” says Seeley. “Our goal is to help them build the confidence, character, and skills they need to thrive, not just academically, but in every aspect of their lives.”
Metro Prep offers four signature programs, GENIUS, SMITH, Impact, and Momentum, that enrich the student experience with unique opportunities in biotechnology, the arts and leadership. Integrated into the academic curriculum, these programs reflect the school’s broader commitment to preparing well-rounded learners who graduate with the confidence, skills, and perspective to stand apart in university and beyond.
Since 2025, Metro Prep has entered an exciting chapter of growth, with a major expansion underway at its 1 Duncan Mill Rd campus in North York. The school is set to occupy the entire 65,000-square-foot building, situated on a 3.65-acre property surrounded by green space and conveniently located near major transit routes. Plans include a new, state-of-the-art theatre, as well as expanded science labs, art studios, performing arts spaces, and biotechnology labs to support Metro Prep’s unique STEM programming.
Throughout the school, there is a tangible sense of energy, innovation, and purpose. Students are encouraged to dream boldly, work hard, and embrace who they are, knowing they are part of a school community that values individuality and genuinely cares about their success and their future.
Key words for Metropolitan Preparatory Academy: Innovation. Rigour. Individuality.
Learning environment
“We visited quite a few schools,” says parent Wei Su. “We were looking for small class sizes, a close-knit community of teachers, students, and staff, and above all, academic excellence. Metro Prep fits the bill. The class sizes are small, so new students get to know everybody quickly, and the teachers have the resources and the time to look after each student with a personalized approach.”
“The first word that comes to mind in describing the school is ‘caring,’” says Stephanie. “Metro Prep emphasizes genuine relationships between the faculty and students. This nurturing environment fosters a community where everyone wants your success.” Vice Principal Joanna Johnson emphasizes this aspect of the educational approach at Metro Prep: “Our teachers know our students by name, but they also know their passions, their challenges, and their potential. That personal connection makes all the difference.”
Learning at Metro Prep extends beyond textbooks and tests. Classrooms are designed to encourage collaboration and critical inquiry. Students engage in debates, Socratic seminars, hands-on projects, interdisciplinary research, and problem-solving challenges. Students consistently apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, whether it is a science lab experiment, a humanities roundtable, or a group business presentation.
“A new student at Metro Prep might be surprised by how collaborative everyone is,” says alumna Danielle Perlon. This is echoed in our conversation with Principal Seeley, who says, “We define success differently here. Success is about beating your personal best, becoming stronger, wiser, and more capable than you were yesterday.”
Beyond simply preparing for the next test, Metro Prep students prepare for the next stage of their lives. Nearly 100% of graduates are accepted into their first-choice universities, including some of the most prestigious programs in Canada and abroad. But success at Metro Prep is not just defined by metrics or trophies; it is defined by each student achieving their personal best.
“It was a Metro Prep teacher who inspired me to pursue a career in computer science,” says alumna Alexis. “He was always available to answer my questions and help me with code, and I stuck to it. It made me so grateful to have this teacher in my corner, always encouraging me, always uplifting me, and I’m so grateful to Metro Prep for having provided me with something like that.”
“Our students know they’re never alone,” says Johnson. “If they need help, if they need encouragement, or even if they need to be pushed, we are there for them.”
The school’s guidance program starts early, with course selection support in the middle school years and intensive university preparation in the senior grades. Students receive one-on-one counselling, individualized academic planning, and ongoing mentorship to ensure they are on track to achieve their goals.
Metro Prep believes that academic excellence is only possible when students feel supported. An outstanding team of teachers, guidance counsellors, and academic advisors work closely with students and families to provide mentorship, intervention, and encouragement at every step.
“I maintain the relationships I built at Metro Prep,” says alumna Stephanie. “I still feel close to the teachers. I know that whenever I return, the connection with the faculty will remain the same.” Student-teacher relationships are foundational to the Metro Prep educational approach and its nurturing learning environment. These relationships are formative, with lasting impacts on students.
The school maintains small class sizes, typically ranging from six to fourteen students, to ensure that no student is overlooked. Small classes enable teachers to: personalize instruction to meet individual strengths and needs, give frequent and detailed feedback, promote active participation and discussion, and nurture critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. In every subject, from biotechnology to English literature to calculus, students are active participants, not passive listeners.
Technology is seamlessly integrated into the learning experience. Students have access to state-of-the-art laboratories, computer science resources, and media tools that enhance research, creativity, and innovation. Every student receives personalized academic support when needed, which ensures no one is left behind. Importantly, technology is regarded as a tool, rather than a crutch, to enhance understanding, collaboration, and creativity.

Faculty and teaching philosophy
“The teachers at Metro Prep are the heart and soul of the school,” says parent Wei Su. “I asked my son about what he liked the most at Metro Prep. His reply was, ‘The teachers made all the difference,’ and I cannot agree more.” Another parent, Mishma Gashyna, shared: “One thing that surprised me and impressed me about Metro Prep was the level of talent, excellence, and creativity among the faculty.”
Parents appreciate how Metro Prep teachers embody the culture and their values every day. They’re dedicated to students’ development and focus on academic excellence and teamwork. They are great people who often go above and beyond to set excellent examples for students.
At the heart of Metro Prep’s success is an exceptional team of educators who are not only experts in their fields but also passionate mentors who truly invest in each student’s journey. “We do not just teach subjects, we teach people,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “Our teachers are mentors, coaches, advocates, and role models. They help students discover who they are and who they can become.”
The teachers are carefully selected for their academic credentials, as well as their passion for teaching and their ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students.
Every teacher at Metro Prep is a specialist in their subject area, often holding advanced degrees, and is deeply dedicated to personalized learning. They are skilled at adapting instruction to meet the diverse needs of students and are actively engaged in extracurricular activities, athletics, and student life. At Metro Prep, teachers truly know each student and their story. This personal approach transforms learning from a transaction into a meaningful relationship.
“Teaching here is not just about delivering curriculum,” says Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “It is about connecting with students, understanding them, challenging them, and supporting them.”
The school’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity over rote memorization. An inquiry-based approach encourages students to ask questions and pursue answers independently, while instruction frequently draws connections across disciplines to build a more integrated understanding of knowledge. Classroom learning is frequently linked to real-world contexts through lab work, creative projects, business simulations, and initiatives focused on social change.
“It was a refreshing experience for my daughter, and for me too,” says parent Mishma Gashyna, “knowing that the teachers genuinely cared about the well-being of the students and how they were performing academically and otherwise.”
Character development is regarded as an essential complement to academic achievement. Teachers emphasize integrity, respect, perseverance, empathy, and leadership, not only through formal instruction but also through mentorship, informal conversations, and consistent daily modelling. High expectations are set for both behaviour and effort, with resilience and kindness valued alongside academic success. “Students know they are cared for here,” says Ryan Seeley. “They know that we believe in them even when they doubt themselves, and that makes all the difference.”
We were surprised by the connection between students and teachers. It really is a defining feature of the Metro Prep experience. Graduates often talk about their relationships with teachers as among the most lasting and impactful aspects of their time at the school. Teachers are remembered not only for their instruction but for their encouragement, belief in students’ potential, and commitment to personal growth. Families appreciate how teachers embody the school’s core values, excellence, compassion, innovation, and integrity, and how their influence on students often extends far beyond the classroom.
Teachers engage in continuous learning and professional development, regularly sharing best practices in a collaborative spirit. We heard a lot about how teachers use faculty meetings as opportunities to workshop ideas, from integrating AI in the classroom to designing interdisciplinary courses and rethinking assessment methods. This commitment to pedagogical growth ensures that students learn from educators who are deeply engaged with both their subjects and the evolving craft of teaching.

Academics
At Metro Prep, academic excellence is regarded as the foundational goal upon which other goals are pursued. From Grades 7 through 12, Metro Prep students receive a rigorous university-preparatory curriculum designed to challenge their thinking, sharpen their skills, and prepare them for the demands of post-secondary education and beyond.
“My son got accepted to his dream university program,” says parent Wei Su. “Thanks to his teachers’ hard work, the school’s focus on academic excellence, and the school’s guidance counsellor, who really helped my son prepare his application.”
Excellence, of course, does not mean conformity. Students are recognized as individuals with unique talents, diverse learning styles, and individual goals. That’s why Metro Prep teachers do not simply deliver course content. Instead, they teach students how to learn, think critically, and apply their knowledge in real-world situations. “The teachers taught me to learn and become independent in my learning,” says Stephanie, a Metro Prep alumna. “We learned how to approach and relate the material to real-world issues, like politics, history, or science. That changed my thinking.”
The approach is dynamic, flexible, and forward-looking, ensuring that students graduate with the academic skills, intellectual curiosity, and confidence they need to thrive. “Our focus is on mastery, not memorization,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “We teach students to ask great questions, to seek understanding, and to see learning as a lifelong journey. Grades matter, but true education goes much deeper.”
Metro Prep offers the full Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) program, enriched with specialized courses and unique electives that align with students’ interests and career ambitions. Small class sizes, typically ranging from six to fourteen students, enable teachers to provide individualized attention, tailor instruction to meet diverse learning needs, and build strong relationships with each student.
The academic programming emphasizes the development of academic skills across core subjects: mathematics, sciences and technology, English, the humanities, the arts, and business. At the same time, students develop essential life skills, including communication, leadership, teamwork, and resilience. Teachers emphasize critical thinking across all disciplines, ensuring that students graduate as articulate, ethical, and globally-minded citizens.
Academic support and guidance
At Metro Prep, no student is left to navigate their academic journey alone. Metro Prep’s approach to guidance and academic support is deeply personal, proactive, and future-focused, designed to ensure that every student is not only successful today but fully prepared for the opportunities of tomorrow.
“We invest in each student as an individual,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “Academic growth, personal growth, career goals, it is all connected. We want our students to leave here confident, capable, and excited for their next chapter.”
From the moment a student joins Metro Prep, whether in Grade 7, Grade 9, or later, they begin a personalized academic journey tailored to their goals, interests, and strengths. The school’s guidance team plays an active role in helping students select the right courses, develop strong study habits, and build skills in organization, time management, and critical thinking. Transitions between middle school, high school, and university preparation are carefully supported. “Success does not happen by accident,” says Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “It happens when students are supported, challenged, and empowered to make smart choices about their education.”
Small class sizes and approachable teachers ensure individual attention is the norm, while daily extra-help sessions, academic workshops, and mentorship programs offer further support. Students with identified learning needs receive customized plans that are developed in collaboration with their families and staff. At Metro Prep, asking for help is encouraged, not as a sign of weakness, but as a smart and essential step toward success.
Flagship programs
While Metro Prep offers a full Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) across all major academic disciplines, what truly distinguishes it are its four flagship programs, each specifically designed to provide students with a significant advantage in their university preparation, career readiness, and personal development.
The GENIUS Program is Toronto’s first and only high school biotechnology program, giving students a head start in DNA science, genetic engineering, and molecular lab skills rarely taught before university.
The SMITH Program (School of Music, Integrated Arts, Theatre, and Humanities) delivers a conservatory-style arts education within a rigorous academic environment, inspiring creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking across disciplines.
The Momentum Program gives Grade 7 and 8 students a powerful head start with a distinctive pre-high school experience focused on academic excellence, leadership development, and global awareness.
The Impact Program, led by Vice Principal Johnson, gives students the tools, mentorship, and platform to turn bold ideas into real-world ventures, combining creativity, entrepreneurship, and purpose to make lasting change.
From biotechnology to the arts, from entrepreneurship to global citizenship, Metro Prep’s four signature programs, GENIUS, SMITH, Impact, and Momentum, give students a distinct advantage. By combining academic excellence with real-world experience, these programs prepare young people not only for university but for a lifetime of leadership, creativity, and purpose.
The GENIUS Program
In a world increasingly defined by science, technology, and innovation, Metro Prep offers students a rare head start through its groundbreaking GENIUS Program, Toronto’s first and only dedicated high school biotechnology program. Building on Metro Prep’s over four decades of academic excellence, the GENIUS Program provides students with exceptional exposure to biotechnology at a level rarely seen in secondary education.
“Biotech is reshaping every major industry,” says Dr. Supipi Duffy, Director and Curriculum Lead, “medicine, forensics, sustainability. With GENIUS, students gain a head start in understanding, contributing to, and leading that change.”
GENIUS is so much more than a science course. It is a multi-faceted learning experience for students curious about the frontiers of modern biology, genetics, and medicine. “We believe students are capable of extraordinary things when given the right tools and the right opportunities,” says Principal Seeley. “GENIUS was built to give young people an authentic, university-level experience with biotechnology, years ahead of their peers.”
Vice Principal Johnson adds, “Biotech is not the future, it’s the present. Our students are stepping into fields like genetics, forensics, and molecular biology, and they’re doing real lab work, not just learning from a textbook.”
Taking a look inside the GENIUS program is truly impressive. Students have access to university-level laboratories where they perform professional-grade experiments. These include DNA extraction, genetic transformation, CRISPR gene editing, PCR amplification, STR profiling, and DNA sequencing, all of which are conducted in fully equipped, state-of-the-art lab environments.
“GENIUS is about access,” emphasizes Dr. Duffy. “It’s about giving high school students opportunities that typically belong to undergraduate students. And watching them rise to it, every time.” This hands-on experience helps develop critical thinking, inquiry, and analysis skills rarely encountered at the high school level.
Through this intensive exposure, students gain early career experience in laboratory techniques, bioinformatics, and data analysis. These advanced skills provide a significant advantage when applying to competitive university programs and scholarships.
The GENIUS curriculum is layered and progressive, spanning Grades 9 through 12. Students master foundational concepts before advancing into specialized areas such as personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics, genetic engineering, stem cell research and regenerative medicine, environmental and agricultural biotechnology, biopharmaceutical development and innovation.
In addition, the program’s exclusive GeneTalk speaker series connects students with leading researchers, entrepreneurs, and healthcare innovators. These sessions offer firsthand insights into cutting-edge developments in biotechnology, genetics, and medicine. They provide students with exposure to how professional scientists approach questions, interpret results, and communicate their findings.
“The GENIUS Program gives our students a unique edge,” says Johnson. “We are preparing students for the future of medicine, science, and technology. The real-world experience they gain here sets them apart not only in university applications, but in their future careers and academic pursuits.”
“We designed every part of GENIUS to be rigorous, relevant, and exciting,” says Dr. Duffy. “It’s university-level learning, taught by experts, built for ambitious young minds.” Students are encouraged to complete research projects that are eligible for national and international competitions, building portfolios that rival those of university undergraduate students. Graduates leave with a strong foundation for future studies in science, medicine, engineering, and research.
Beyond the classroom and the laboratory, students are encouraged and supported to participate in national and international science fairs, biotech innovation challenges, and research events. There are also leadership development opportunities, since the program is designed to nurture leadership skills, with opportunities for students to take initiative, collaborate on projects, and present their work to real-world audiences.
GENIUS offers a distinct pathway to university success by equipping students with the scientific knowledge, technical skills, and research experience that top universities increasingly look for in science, engineering, and pre-med applicants. “Most students don’t get hands-on experience in biotechnology until university,” says Dr. Duffy. “At MetroPrep, they get it in high school. That’s not just rare, it’s transformative.”
Listening to parents, it becomes clear that the GENIUS Program has quickly become a key factor for many families choosing Metro Prep over other private schools. Parents appreciate the opportunity for their children to meaningfully engage with biotechnology, innovation, and advanced scientific thinking, well before they reach university. For many, GENIUS offers not only strong academic preparation but also a rare opportunity to explore emerging fields and build confidence as future contributors to science, technology, and healthcare.
The SMITH Program
Another program only Metro Prep could have designed, the SMITH Program, School of Music, Integrated Arts, Theatre, and Humanities, reflects the school’s ability to blend academic rigour with creative exploration. Developed to expand students’ creativity, critical thinking, and leadership, SMITH regards the arts as key disciplines that build confidence, deepen expression, and drive innovation across all areas of learning.
“The biggest shock is that I hated performing,” says a current student. “But I came to Metro, and by Grade 8, I was in a theatre production, and I was playing a pretty significant role. I had quite a few lines; it was a three-hour play. I spent five months memorizing lines, practicing every other day after school, and I finally went on to do a theatre production! And I found something I really enjoyed.”
Founded by Principal Ryan Seeley, the SMITH Program stands as a testament to Metro Prep’s commitment to individuality, excellence, and innovation. With a Master’s degree in Drama from the University of Toronto and professional experience in acting, directing, and music, Seeley envisioned a program that would integrate the arts and humanities into the very fabric of a student’s academic journey. The result is a creative learning space that inspires students to explore their talents, challenge assumptions, and develop the creative confidence needed to shape the world around them. “We are not just teaching students how to perform or create,” says Seeley. “We are teaching them how to think deeply, express boldly, and lead with heart.”
“The SMITH program inspired me to be creative,” says a student. “I’m planning to go to film school. Metro Prep really inspired me to become an artist.”
Several factors make the SMITH Program unique. It is far from simply being an arts elective. It is a multidisciplinary experiential platform that combines a rigorous approach to the artistic disciplines with lively, explorative practices. Students are immersed in disciplines such as music, theatre, the humanities, and the integrated arts.
- Music: Through Metro Prep’s Alternative Orchestra, students of all skill levels collaborate to perform timeless classics and contemporary works. Professional musician mentorship, live performances, sound engineering, and music production workshops give students direct access to industry standards.
- Integrated arts: Students explore painting, photography, digital design, filmmaking, and visual storytelling, pushing creative boundaries while gaining technical skills. Metro Prep’s onsite art gallery offers a professional platform for students to showcase their work.
- Theatre: Through intensive workshops, rehearsals, and black-box theatre productions, students engage in acting, directing, voice training, method acting, and technical theatre. Past productions have included Frankenstein, Of Mice and Men, The Laramie Project, and Lord of the Flies, an impressive lineage that speaks to the program’s excellence.
- Humanities: Anchored by a rich and challenging humanities curriculum, SMITH students delve into history, literature, philosophy, and ethics, building empathy, intellectual curiosity, and a profound understanding of the human experience.
A conservatory experience within a university-prep school, SMITH weaves creativity directly into the academic day, quite unlike conventional high school programs where the arts are merely extracurricular. Students engage in real performances, curate gallery exhibits, produce short films, and stage original theatre productions, all while meeting Metro Prep’s high academic standards. The SMITH experience extends beyond the classroom and even school walls. It includes:
- Field trips to top arts organizations, studios, theatres, museums, and cultural institutions expand students’ creative and cultural awareness.
- Life-changing humanitarian experiences, including international trips to places like Ecuador, Belize, Kenya, and Sri Lanka, are integrated into the humanities curriculum.
- Meaningful mentorship from professional artists, musicians, directors, and writers gives students firsthand insight into careers in the creative industries.
Whether their passions lie in music, filmmaking, theatre, visual arts, writing, or broader fields of leadership and innovation, students graduate from the program with tangible portfolios, public performances, and creative works that enhance both university applications and future career paths.
Parents described to us that the program has a positive impact on their children’s confidence, intellectual risk-taking, and creative development. One parent shared that SMITH “gave my son a sense of purpose and identity,” helping him find a community that valued his creativity and provided pathways to real opportunities.
“My daughter loved being in the SMITH Program at Metro Prep,” says parent Mishma Gashyna. “The teachers were supportive and encouraging, and she could truly be herself.” Another parent, Theda Zigomanis, similarly says: “My daughter, very artistically inclined, was part of the SMITH program, while still loving math and science, and excelling at those.”
At a time when creativity and adaptability are essential for future success, the SMITH Program stands out for its ability to cultivate not only artistic skills but also critical thinking, resilience, and leadership. Through every project, performance, and artistic endeavour, Metro Prep’s SMITH Program nurtures the innovators and creative thinkers of tomorrow.
The Momentum Program
At Metro Prep, students learn that success is never accidental; it’s the result of deliberate, focused effort. That is the mindset behind the Momentum Program, a new, forward-thinking academic and leadership initiative designed specifically for students in Grades 7 and 8.
“We created Momentum to give middle school students a head start, not just academically, but personally and socially as well,” explains Principal Seeley. “We saw an opportunity to create a true pre-high school experience that sets students up for success in every area of life.”
Vice Principal Joanna Johnson adds, “At this critical age, students need mentorship, inspiration, and confidence. That goes well beyond classes. Momentum is about building strong, capable, independent young people who are ready to take on the challenges of high school and beyond.”
The Momentum Program is, indeed, a new approach to middle school. The program combines academic enrichment, leadership development, global awareness, and personal growth for students in Grades 7 and 8, preparing them for the academic rigour and personal responsibility of high school. The program includes:
- High school preparation courses: Enriched courses that anticipate the expectations and skills required for Metro Prep’s high school program. Students develop advanced study habits, organization skills, critical thinking abilities, and project-based learning strategies.
- Leadership training: Through structured workshops, public speaking opportunities, mentorship experiences, and leadership roles within the school, students develop the skills to lead with confidence, purpose, and empathy.
- Global citizenship: Students participate in discussions and projects that address real-world issues, including climate change, innovation, global health, and equity. They are encouraged to think critically about the world they live in and the impact they can have on it.
- Personalized mentorship: Each student is paired with a faculty mentor who provides guidance, encouragement, and support throughout their two-year Momentum journey.
- Arts, athletics, and innovation: Momentum students participate in Metro Prep’s comprehensive arts, sports, and innovation programming, enabling them to explore their interests, discover their talents, and develop a well-rounded, healthy school experience.
- Community and character development: Respect, resilience, responsibility, and collaboration are woven into the daily culture of the Momentum Program. Students learn not only how to succeed academically, but also how to be positive and compassionate members of their community.
While Momentum students benefit from all the advantages of Metro Prep’s larger school community, the program is also designed to create a tight-knit, supportive cohort among the Grade 7 and 8 students. Momentum-only events, leadership days, team-building retreats, and community service projects help deepen friendships and a strong sense of belonging. Students we spoke with described feeling like they are part of a team that believes in them and is cheering for their success.
“Our goal is to help students find their voice, their confidence, and their momentum, so that when they move into Grade 9, they are ready not just to survive high school, but to thrive,” says Principal Seeley. “Our goal with Momentum is to build not just academic readiness, but real confidence and leadership. We are giving students the tools they need to thrive at the next level and beyond.”
Vice Principal Joanna Johnson adds, “Momentum recognizes that middle school is not just preparation for high school. It is the foundation for future success. By focusing on leadership, resilience, and academic skills, we are helping students build a path to excellence.”
While middle school is often relatively overlooked in traditional educational models, Metro Prep approaches it differently. Focusing on Grades 7 and 8, the Momentum Program is designed to nurture the mindsets, habits, and skills that will have a profound impact on a student’s long-term academic and personal trajectory. By investing deeply in these crucial years, Momentum ensures that students are prepared for high school success and are positioned to take advantage of Metro Prep’s signature programs, like the GENIUS (biotechnology) Program, the SMITH (arts) Program, and the Impact (leadership) Program.
The Impact Program
At Metro Prep, education is more than personal achievement. It is a launchpad for making a difference. This belief comes to life in the Impact Program, led by Vice Principal Joanna Johnson, a passionate advocate for student voice and social responsibility.
“The world does not just need smart people. It needs leaders with courage, compassion, and conviction,” says Johnson. “Impact is about helping students discover that their voices matter, and that they can change the world around them.”
The Impact Program empowers students to take initiative, think entrepreneurially, and lead with purpose. Through hands-on, student-driven projects, they explore real-world issues and turn their passions into action. Whether launching awareness campaigns, creating social ventures, or designing products that support a cause, students develop leadership skills that matter. These include planning, budgeting, public speaking, marketing, advocacy, and creative problem-solving.
Students who care about topics such as social equity, mental health, Indigenous reconciliation, climate change, or global education find a platform to turn interest into action. They learn that leadership takes many forms, from building brands with purpose to organizing school-wide events, creating media campaigns, or launching charitable products. The program encourages imagination, initiative, and follow-through.
Sample projects within the Impact Program have included student-designed merchandise collections, with proceeds directed toward scholarships or international charities; awareness campaigns addressing issues such as Indigenous reconciliation, climate change, and anti-bullying; and social entrepreneurship ventures, where students develop products that convey a message, tell a story, or support a cause.
“The beauty of Impact is that students learn how to use art, innovation, and business as tools for social good,” explains Joanna Johnson. “They realize that changing the world is not reserved for adults or for someday in the future. It starts here. It starts now.”
Students may begin with idealism, but then they turn to practical action, working on their real-world skills like public speaking, advocacy, entrepreneurial planning, media creation, branding, financial literacy, and team leadership. Through a combination of workshops, mentorship, and project-based learning, participants build the confidence and capabilities to lead meaningful initiatives, graduating with a strong foundation in leadership and applied experience.
It’s significant that the Impact Program is integrated into Metro Prep’s broader culture of leadership, service, and innovation, with students encouraged to participate not only through individual projects, school-wide initiatives, campaigns, and events. One highlight is the annual Metro Prep Impact Showcase, where students present their work to the community. This is an event that celebrates student achievement while inspiring others to pursue meaningful change. Families, alumni, and community members attend, drawn by the creativity, ambition, and substance of the students’ efforts.
Through Impact, Metro Prep offers more than academics. It nurtures the next generation of creative leaders, giving students an edge that sets them apart in university, in their careers, and in the world they are helping to shape.
University and career preparation
Metro Prep’s university placement record is outstanding. Nearly 100% of graduates pursue post-secondary education in their first-choice institutions, with many gaining admission to some of the most prestigious programs in Canada, the United States, and beyond.
Preparation is a personalized process, grounded in a respect for each student’s goals, strengths, and aspirations. Beginning early in their high school journey, students receive one-on-one counselling to explore university options, refine program choices, and navigate application requirements.
Rather than following a rigid checklist, the school works closely with students to help them navigate their next steps with confidence and clarity. As one graduate reflected, “Looking back, Metro Prep gave me more than just an education. It taught me how to believe in myself, speak up, and not be afraid to take on new challenges when I got to university.” For students seeking more than a diploma, Metro Prep offers a genuine launchpad for life.
A series of workshops on essay writing sessions, application boot camps, and scholarship seminars helps prepare students for every stage of the process. Those applying to arts, design, biotech, or research programs receive guidance on building strong portfolios, while mock interviews and personal statement coaching ensure students present themselves with clarity and confidence.
“When I took chemistry at university, a lot of it was review,” says alumna Danielle Perlon. “I did so well in university chemistry. Now that I’m looking back, yes, it was hard sometimes in high school, but it made my life so much easier in university.”
“We do not just send students out the door with a transcript,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “We work side by side with them to open doors, and give them the confidence to walk through them.”
At Metro Prep, high school is seen not just as preparation for university admission, but as the foundation for a fulfilling and impactful life. Through signature programs like GENIUS, SMITH, Momentum, and Impact, students engage in meaningful work that reflects leadership, innovation, creativity, and service, experiences that go far beyond the traditional transcript. They graduate with the confidence and capacity to thrive in university and make a meaningful contribution to the world around them.
As one parent noted, “What made Metro Prep different for us was how they focused on the whole person. Our daughter learned how to think critically and truly believe in her abilities.” In a world that values adaptability, insight, and initiative, Metro Prep equips students not only with knowledge but with a sense of purpose and the tools to act on it.
Course selection is guided to balance university prerequisites with opportunities for intellectual exploration and growth. When application season arrives, students receive hands-on support with essays, résumés, portfolios, scholarship applications, and interviews. The school also hosts university representatives from Canada and abroad, along with dedicated info nights and fairs to help families navigate the process with clarity. The results are consistent: nearly all graduates gain admission to their top-choice universities, many with substantial scholarships.
At Metro Prep, student life is designed to build not only memories but character. Through their activities, leadership opportunities, friendships, and challenges, students develop the resilience, empathy, creativity, and confidence that will serve them long after graduation.
“In everything we do, academics, arts, athletics, service, we are teaching students how to lead lives of purpose,” says Joanna Johnson. “It is not just about succeeding. It is about becoming the kind of person who makes a difference in the world.” At Metro Prep, students find more than a school. They find a community, their voice, and the foundation for a lifetime of success.
“We are not just preparing students to graduate,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “We are preparing them to thrive in university, in careers, and in life. Our students leave Metro Prep with the knowledge, confidence, and resilience to excel wherever they go.”
“I felt prepared for university,” says alumna Danielle Perlon. “Metro Prep did such a good job of preparing us. We actually used one of the university prep books in our calculus class.”
Academic success is only part of the equation when it comes to preparing students for the future. At Metro Prep, equal attention is given to building resilience, independence, and critical thinking skills essential for university and life. Students learn to manage their time effectively, study efficiently, and balance their academic and personal commitments. They are supported in developing self-advocacy through mentorship, leadership roles, and strong teacher relationships. Opportunities to step beyond their comfort zones, on stage, in labs, or during service trips, help cultivate adaptability and confidence. As Joanna Johnson explains, “Our students are not only academically prepared. They are prepared as thinkers, creators, innovators, and citizens of the world.”
Graduates of Metro Prep go on to study at leading universities in Canada, the United States, and around the world, including institutions such as the University of Toronto, McGill, Queen’s, Western, UBC, NYU, the University of California system, and the London School of Economics. They pursue a wide range of fields, from medicine, engineering, and law to business, the arts, and public service. Many return to campus to mentor current students and reflect on how their time at Metro Prep shaped both their academic paths and personal growth, leaving a lasting impact on their futures.
Student life and community
“At Metro Prep, school is not just a place you go, it becomes a second home,” says Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “It is a place where students belong, where their voices matter, and where lifelong friendships are formed.”
Walking the halls of Metro Prep, there is a tangible energy: students exchanging ideas, creating art, debating issues, laughing with friends, preparing for performances, and taking pride in being part of something larger than themselves.
Metro Prep is designed to be an inclusive and supportive environment where students from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to engage fully in school life. Without rigid social hierarchies or cliques, students can form friendships across grades and explore their interests freely. Small class sizes and a close-knit community ensure that each student is recognized and supported as an individual, contributing to a culture where respect and belonging are part of daily experience. “Our students feel a sense of ownership over their school,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “They know they belong here, and that makes all the difference.”
A strong sense of community and belonging was often mentioned in our conversations with the students and alumni. The teachers and staff put effort into maintaining the community spirit because they recognize that academic achievement is only one part of a well-rounded educational experience. They ensure that every student feels connected, engaged, and supported, not just as learners, but as individuals. From the moment students walk through the doors, they find more than classrooms and textbooks; they find a community.
“School should be about more than just marks. It should be about discovery, connection, and growth,” says Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “At Metro Prep, we work hard to make sure every student feels seen, valued, and empowered.”
School-wide events and traditions play an important role in shaping the sense of community at Metro Prep. From art exhibitions and student-led social impact showcases to spirit days, seasonal performances, and graduation ceremonies, these gatherings offer students opportunities to celebrate creativity, leadership, and achievement. Whether highlighting individual talents or collective effort, each event contributes to a shared culture of pride, connection, and lasting memories.
Metro Prep places a strong emphasis on creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where students feel a genuine sense of belonging. Students are encouraged to express themselves openly, knowing they are supported by a close network of teachers, mentors, and peers. In feedback and surveys, they consistently describe the school as a family-like community, supportive, accepting, and uplifting. This foundation of care allows students not only to meet academic challenges but also to grow with confidence, knowing they are valued as individuals.
Clubs, Teams, and Activities
Metro Prep’s vibrant extracurricular life offers students numerous opportunities to get involved, take initiative, and build a sense of community. A wide range of activities gives students the chance to explore interests beyond the classroom while building meaningful skills.
Clubs and groups span academic, creative, social, and recreational areas, from debate, student council, and biotech to theatre productions, music ensembles, and photography. Students can join advocacy and sustainability initiatives or participate in casual clubs like Dungeons & Dragons. They’re also encouraged to propose new groups aligned with their interests. Through these activities, students gain valuable experience in leadership, teamwork, and communication.
“We tell students all the time: if you do not see a club you love, create it,” says Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “That spirit of initiative and leadership is something we foster from the first day.”
Leadership is central to the student council, which organizes events, spirit weeks, fundraisers, and outreach projects. Signature events like Spirit Week, talent shows, and SMITH and GENIUS showcases bring the school community together throughout the year, while service projects and international trips offer broader horizons. Students are encouraged to shape the culture by creating new clubs and traditions. School spirit is rooted not in performance, but in shared purpose and authentic connection.
“As soon as we visited Metro Prep, what struck us most was the atmosphere. It was warm, unpretentious, and real,” one parent shared. “It wasn’t showy or rehearsed. We knew right away this was a place where our child would be known and supported.”
Arts, athletics, and wellness
At Metro Prep, art is not treated as an isolated subject. It is a medium through which students actively engage with history, social justice, and contemporary issues. Throughout the school, interdisciplinary projects bring classrooms to life, transforming hallways into spaces for reflection and dialogue. Students have recreated Ruby Bridges’ walk to school using multimedia elements, connected Holocaust history to family narratives in a tribute to the MS St. Louis, and led a Truth and Reconciliation project with orange puzzle pieces as a platform for learning about Indigenous history in Canada. Other installations have explored the civil rights movement and sparked debate over the JFK assassination, blending creativity with historical inquiry.
These initiatives develop not only artistic skill, but also critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper awareness of the world. “When you combine creativity, history, and real-world discussion, learning becomes transformative,” says Joanna Johnson. “Students are not just memorizing events; they are engaging with them, questioning them, and seeing their relevance today.” At Metro Prep, education extends far beyond the classroom; it lives in the art, the questions, and the conversations that surround it.
Similarly, athletics and wellness are considered essential to a well-rounded education that supports both physical and emotional development. Students have access to a wide range of sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, track and field, badminton, and ultimate frisbee. They can participate in competitive teams that regularly compete in SSAF league events, or join intramural and recreational activities designed to be inclusive of all experience levels. “A healthy mind needs a healthy body,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “Our athletic program is about so much more than competition.” A new gymnasium, scheduled to open in 2025, will further enhance these offerings.
“There is a place for everyone in our athletic program,” adds Vice Principal Joanna Johnson. “Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or trying something new, you’ll find support, coaching, and community.”
“Sports mirror life,” says Johnson. “There will be wins. There will be losses. There will be tough moments. We want our students to learn how to face all of it, with heart, resilience, and integrity.”
The energy surrounding athletics at Metro Prep reflects more than just a love of sport, it reflects a deep sense of pride, connection, and shared purpose. Whether striving for personal bests or playing simply for enjoyment, students are supported by a community that shows up loudly and enthusiastically, with teachers, peers, and families cheering from the sidelines. The school’s mascot, Lore the Lion, captures this spirit of determination and heart. Every competition, practice, and team event reinforces values of resilience, leadership, and community. Here, athletics and wellness are not separate from academics; they are vital components of preparing students to lead, contribute, and thrive.
Student-athletes at Metro Prep often emerge as leaders across the school community. The values learned through athletics, like teamwork, communication, goal-setting, and dedication, translate directly into success in academics, the arts, leadership, and beyond.
Wellness programming at Metro Prep goes beyond physical activity. The school offers workshops on mindfulness and stress management, access to guidance counsellors, and initiatives that foster empathy, respect, and emotional resilience. Together, these supports reflect a holistic approach to student well-being, helping students develop healthy habits and a strong foundation for lifelong growth.
“We teach our students that winning on the court is great,” says Principal Ryan Seeley, “but winning in life means taking care of your whole self, body, mind, and spirit.”
Trips and global learning opportunities
Some of the most impactful learning at Metro Prep takes place outside the classroom, through experiences that broaden perspective and build character. Students have participated in service learning trips to countries like Tanzania, Belize, and Ecuador; explored science through hands-on biotech fieldwork; and engaged in arts and cultural immersion excursions.
Leadership retreats and outdoor education programs further support personal growth. “When students see the world beyond their immediate surroundings, they come back changed for the better,” says Joanna Johnson. “They come back with a bigger sense of who they are and what they can contribute.”
The story of the lion: Strength, legacy, and heart
Metro Prep’s lion mascot is tied to a formative experience that continues to shape the school’s identity. Years ago, a group of students and staff travelled to Tanzania on a humanitarian trip to help lay the foundation for a village school. Working in difficult conditions, digging trenches under the intense sun and engaging in local community life, students came to admire the strength and resilience of the people they met. The experience left a lasting impression and became a defining moment in the school’s story, one that lives on in the lion, a symbol of courage, connection, and purpose.
While in Tanzania, the Metro Prep group took part in a “water walk”, a daily task for many village women who travelled long distances to collect water for their families. Students found even one trip exhausting, gaining a powerful appreciation for the strength and resilience these women demonstrated every day. During a break from construction, they were welcomed into a local woman’s home. Inside, colourful fabric was draped across the ceiling beams, transforming the modest space with warmth and creativity. When Principal Ryan Seeley remarked on the beauty of the fabric, the woman smiled proudly.
The following day, while mixing dry concrete, the students made a discovery: the “fabric” they had admired in the home was not fabric at all, but repurposed concrete bags. What they had mistaken for decoration was, in fact, a striking example of resourcefulness, turning discarded materials into something both beautiful and functional.
In a community where nothing was wasted, every item held value and purpose. Among the bags was one that stood out, printed with the image of a lion. That image came to symbolize the strength, resilience, and creativity the students witnessed in the community, and ultimately inspired the lion mascot that now represents Metro Prep’s spirit and story.
That lion became a memory, a lesson, and ultimately, Metro Prep’s official mascot, Lore the Lion. The name “Lore” was chosen because it echoes the enduring stories and lessons of struggle, as well as the strength of spirit from one generation to the next.
“We often tell students the story behind our lion mascot,” says Principal Seeley. “It’s not just a symbol. It is a living reminder of what it means to endure challenges, to use every resource wisely, to lead with strength, and to leave the world better than you found it.”
“I watched our students work together, support each other, and pour their hearts into helping another community,” says Vice Principal Johnson, who was part of the trip. “That lion represents who we are.”
Today, the original canvas concrete bag with the lion is proudly framed and displayed at Metro Prep as a daily reminder of the school’s commitment to resilience, service, leadership, and ingenuity. It is not merely a relic of a trip; it is woven into the very culture of the school.
At Metro Prep, the lion is more than a mascot. It is a promise. A promise that every student has the strength within them to build, to create, to endure, and to lead; a promise that hard work, community, and compassion are the true markers of success; a promise that greatness is not about accolades or appearances. It is about character. At Metro Prep, every student is a lion in spirit: courageous, resilient, creative, and ready to leave a legacy of their own.
Spirit Days, traditions, and special events
A strong sense of community and school spirit defines daily life at Metro Prep. Spirit Days, cultural festivals, art shows, and biotech fairs punctuate the calendar, creating regular moments for students to celebrate their interests and connect with one another. Impact-led service initiatives, such as charity drives and volunteer campaigns, reinforce values of empathy and responsibility.
The atmosphere is upbeat and personal; students often describe it as a place where “you are excited to walk through the doors in the morning,” and where staff and students greet each other by name. As one Grade 12 student put it, “There is an energy here. It feels like you are part of something bigger than yourself.”
The takeaway
With many private school options in Toronto, what sets Metro Prep apart is not only its outstanding academic offerings or university placement record, but the feeling families experience the moment they walk through the doors. It is a place where students are known, heard, and supported in discovering who they are. Rather than being asked to conform, students are challenged to grow into themselves, to explore their interests, and to lead lives of purpose. “We believe that every student has the potential to do something extraordinary,” says Principal Ryan Seeley. “Our job is to help them find it, build it, and believe in it.”
This philosophy shapes every part of the school, from its inclusive culture to its groundbreaking programs. The GENIUS biotechnology program, the SMITH performing arts stream, the Impact social leadership program, and the Momentum middle school experience offer students real opportunities to lead, create, innovate, and make a difference. These programs are not add-ons; they are core to what makes Metro Prep unique, and they give students a distinct advantage in life and learning.
You’ll find this spirit not only in classrooms and labs, but on stage, in service projects, and in the quiet moments of one-on-one mentorship. At Metro Prep, academic rigour is matched by emotional intelligence, ethical awareness, and social responsibility. Students graduate not only prepared to succeed, but prepared to lead — with curiosity, integrity, and a strong sense of their place in the world.
Choosing Metro Prep means investing in more than academics. It means joining a community that sees each student as a future leader, creator, and contributor. It is a place where potential is recognized early and nurtured with care, often before students see it in themselves. Education here is not just preparation for the future; it is the foundation for meaningful impact.
Rather than adhering to convention, the school defines excellence on its own terms: as a place where students are encouraged to imagine boldly and given the tools to turn those visions into reality.
A strong sense of belonging is one of Metro Prep’s defining qualities. With a smaller student population, every individual is known, supported, and encouraged to thrive in a community built on kindness and mutual respect. Students are free to express themselves through the arts, sciences, athletics, leadership, or service, without pressure to conform. As one student put it, “At Metro Prep, you do not have to change who you are to fit in. You fit in because you are you.”
Metro Prep’s commitment is clear and unwavering. Every student is known, supported, challenged, and prepared, not only for post-secondary success, but for a life defined by leadership, creativity, and purpose. For many families, Metro Prep offers a rare and compelling balance of academic rigour, personal growth, and genuine community. It is not simply a school. It is a place where students are seen for who they are, encouraged to become who they are meant to be, and equipped to shape the world ahead.
