Ontario Montessori schools

Find the top Montessori schools and programs in Ontario.

Here’s OUR KIDS' overview of Montessori schools in Ontario. Ontario is home to a wide network of Montessori programs, from intimate preschool classrooms to larger elementary schools, and including schools in Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, WhitbyBrantford, Unionville, and other centres.

Rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy, these environments emphasize independence, self-directed learning, and respect for each child’s natural pace of development. Parents often value the balance of academic fundamentals with creativity, problem-solving, and practical life skills. For a more complete guide to Montessori education, including a detailed discussion of philosophy and classroom practices, start with our guide to Montessori

Costs differ by region and program length, with annual tuition typically starting around $5,000 and reaching upward of $30,000 for full-time, extended offerings. With options ranging from early years to the elementary grades, families can find settings that align with both their educational priorities and budget.

For nearly 30 years, we’ve toured schools, listened to families, and gathered insights to help you compare choices and feel confident in your decision. Start exploring below.

Schools using a Montessori approach for preschool or daycare

Some schools aren't Montessori schools, but use a Montessori approach for their preschool or daycare program. This approach gives young learners plenty of freedom to choose tasks and activities that interest them, which promotes their independence and confidence. It also strongly emphasizes concrete learning, where children work with lots of hands-on materials, and do practical life activities. Children usually work independently or in small groups in these programs.

  • The Montessori philosophy and approach, based on the research and insights of Maria Montessori, is distinctive and holistic. Montessori schools in Ontario, including preschools, offer a number of progressive classroom practices that stand out in the educational landscape.

For a deeper understanding of Montessori education, explore our comprehensive Montessori school guide.

    Montessori classroom practices

Self-directed work: Montessori students engage in a high level of independent work. Within a structured environment, they select their own tasks and materials and often determine their own pace, guided by the teacher. This autonomy fosters meaningful learning and often leads to a lifelong love of learning.

Concrete learning: Especially at the preschool and elementary levels, students use hands-on materials to build foundational life skills. This multisensory, practical approach accelerates learning and improves engagement and focus.

Minimal tests and grades: Unlike mainstream education, Montessori schools rarely use traditional tests or grades. Assessment is informal, based on observation and developmental rubrics. The philosophy emphasizes intrinsic motivation—students learn because they find the work meaningful, not for external rewards.

Individualized curriculum: Ontario Montessori schools place a strong emphasis on academics—even at an early age—while tailoring learning to each child's pace and interests. Individualized plans allow children to master core subjects like math, science, and language arts in ways that suit them best.

    Montessori curricular and teaching approach

Montessori schools in Ontario typically use an integrated curriculum. Subjects are interconnected rather than taught in isolation. For instance, a lesson on the origin of life may combine elements of biology, chemistry, religion, and history, offering a richer understanding.

Rather than using traditional direct instruction, teachers act as facilitators—working with individuals or small groups to support their learning. Peer learning is encouraged, with older students often mentoring younger ones, modeling positive behavior, and helping build a collaborative classroom environment.

Teachers often observe rather than lead, intervening only when needed. This promotes self-confidence, collaboration, and accountability among students.

To explore how Montessori education evolves across stages, see our Montessori curriculum guide. To see its suitability for students with special needs like gifted children, refer to our Montessori and special needs guide.

    Montessori schools in Ontario

Ontario Montessori schools are located in cities like Toronto, Ottawa, Brampton, Mississauga, London, Kingston, St. Catharines, Oakville, Milton, Pickering, Scarborough, Brantford, Unionville, Stouffville, Aurora, and Vaughan. Parents in Ontario have a broad selection of Montessori options to explore.

While some Ontario Montessori schools closely follow Maria Montessori’s original philosophy, others incorporate more modern educational strategies. As each school is unique, it’s important to choose one that aligns with your child’s needs and your family’s educational values.

Ontario is also home to prestigious post-secondary institutions like the University of Toronto, Queen’s University, Western University, McMaster University, and the University of Waterloo. These schools reinforce the province’s commitment to academic excellence at all levels.
